An anonymous buyer offered around 64,000 euros to acquire the captain's armband thrown out of spite on the Belgrade lawn by Cristiano Ronaldo, during the 2022 World Cup qualifying match against Serbia and put up for sale to help a sick child.
Picked up by a firefighter, Djordje Vukicevic, present at the stadium during the match, the armband was up for auction until Friday morning on the limundo.com site.
Vukicevic, who initially acted anonymously but has since disclosed his identity, had contacted a regional sports channel with the idea of putting him up for auction.
The idea was to help a six-month-old baby, little Gavrilo Djurdjevic, suffering from spinal muscular atrophy and help finance the treatment of this rare disease.
Spinal muscular atrophy is a neuromuscular disease that affects approximately one in 10,000 births.
Without treatment, muscles weaken, progressing gradually to paralysis or death, frequently before the second birthday.
The cost of the treatment is estimated at more than two million euros.
Portugal, the reigning European champion, had to settle for a draw (2-2) on Saturday, after a goal from Ronaldo, who had crossed the line, was refused by the referee in all end of the game.
