A great sum for a great action.

An anonymous buyer offered around 64,000 euros to acquire the captain's armband thrown out of spite on the Belgrade lawn by Cristiano Ronaldo, during the 2022 World Cup qualifying match against Serbia and put on sale to help a sick child.

Picked up by a firefighter, Djordje Vukicevic, present at the stadium during the match, the armband was up for auction until Friday morning on the limundo.com site.

Vukicevic, who initially acted anonymously but has since disclosed his identity, had contacted a regional sports channel with the idea of putting him up for auction.

Neuromuscular disease

The idea was to help a 6 month old baby, little Gavrilo Djurdjevic, suffering from spinal muscular atrophy and to help finance the treatment of this rare disease.

Spinal muscular atrophy is a neuromuscular disease that affects approximately one in 10,000 births. Left untreated, muscles weaken, gradually progressing to paralysis or death, frequently before the second birthday.

The cost of the treatment is estimated at more than two million euros.

In Serbia, fundraising campaigns to finance expensive healthcare abroad have increased in recent years.

It is common to see the faces of children plastered by the side of the road.

Millions of euros have been raised in this Balkan country where the average monthly salary is less than 500 euros.

Portugal, the reigning European champion, had to settle for a draw (2-2) on Saturday, after a goal from Ronaldo, who had crossed the line, was refused by the referee in all end of the game.
