Rainer Fleck: The faithful playmaker

Rainer Fleck even enraptured his opponent in the Bayernliga - he turned down offers from professional clubs.

Taufkirchen - The big football stage beckons.

1. FC Saarbrücken and VfB Stuttgart want to get him, Christoph Daum also calls Taufkirchen.

But the down-to-earth Rainer Fleck opts for his profession and career in the Bayernliga, and that is more than impressive.

It almost wouldn't have worked with the sport in which he was supposed to play his opponents dizzy in rows, score numerous goals and prepare even more and to which he subordinated a lot.

It wasn't until the age of twelve that Fleck really started playing football.

After suffering a fractured skull at the age of six, his parents initially don't want him to be a footballer.

That's why he only bolted with friends on the square of the district hospital in Haar near Munich.

But in 1974 the family moved to Taufkirchen, where his father took over the management of the district hospital, and Rainer was allowed to join what was then BSG Himolla.

He quickly integrated himself into the school team, met two boys with whom he was still deeply friends today: Kurt Dworschak and Manfred Heilmeier.

In the 1970s, there was only the subdivision of schoolchildren (up to 14 years) and youth (up to 18 years) in the youth sector.

So Fleck first has to assert himself in the A2 youth against much older, but technically not quite as experienced players.

He masters this with flying colors.

From the A1, at 17 and with a special permit, he went to the district league men that Robert Stöckl trains.

"For the first two years, the trainer set me up as a man hit for the opposing playmaker," says Rainer Fleck.

It quickly becomes clear that he was called to do more than just a man hit.

Fleck is now the game designer and plays in the District League East until the age of 22.

Together with his team-mate Albert Ostermaier, he is appointed to the regional league selection of the Bavarian Football Association.

This is how the late-caller made a name for himself beyond the district league.

Together with his friend Albert, he is switching to Bayern league team Ampfing in a double pack.

The two clubs cannot agree on a transfer fee.

The two are banned for three months, during this time they play in the third team of the Ampfinger team, which the club and spectators give them high credit.

Fleck played four years in what was then the third highest league in the country.

“We had an incredible sense of solidarity in the team.

The then "Munich carpool" around the ex-Bayern professional Norbert Janzon was happy to stay with the team after the games, in order to end the successes and the failures in good company.

“It was an unbelievably great time,” says Fleck enthusiastically.

“The previous season Ampfing was still playing against relegation.

A year later we were suddenly third in the Bayern League.

The 85/86 season was the year for me, ”says Fleck.

He is appointed to the Bayern selection, which prevailed 4-0 against the hosts at the regional cup in Berlin - also thanks to two goals from Rainer Fleck.

But it wasn't enough to advance against Bremen alongside Werner Lorant and Armin Veh.

A year later it goes to Barsinghausen against the Middle Rhine and Bremen with a new line-up.

At these games, professional clubs also become aware of Fleck.

In Saarbrücken, when he was relegated from the 1st Bundesliga at the time, he was presented with a contract that was ready to be signed after a trial training session.

The always very grounded Taufkirchener decides against it.

“There were also two or three non-binding inquiries.

Blau-Weiß Berlin (then 1. Liga, the editor) was interested, VfB Stuttgart wanted to sign me as a contract amateur.

And then, on a Sunday morning, I got a call from Christoph Daum in my parents' house.

At that time he was assistant coach at 1. FC Köln.

He asked me if I was interested and I said 'yes, yes'.

He told me that they would watch me and come back to me if necessary. "

But nothing will come of it.

Fleck does not ask himself the question of a missed opportunity or doubts that he acted correctly back then.

“I am a rational person.

I was 24 years old at the time and had completed my degree in business administration two years earlier, after which I did 18 months of military service.

With a professional contract, I would have been four years out of my studies.

That was just too uncertain for me at the time.

Besides, I'm way too self-critical.

My big weakness was the header game.

Also because I had always tried to avoid it because of my fractured skull, ”explains Fleck.

"Maybe it would have looked different if a really big, well-known club had come." The "selfish professional business" and Rainer Fleck - somehow they don't want to go together.

It's different in small Ampfing, where he played in the Bavarian League until 1988.

It is his greatest time, with games in front of almost 15,000 spectators at 3: 3 in the Grünwalder Stadium against 1860 Munich.

After a game against SpVgg Fürth (with the later HSV player Dietmar Beiersdorfer) the Franconian press turned over and praised the "young playmaker Rainer Fleck", from whom one will hear a lot, of which the Fürth coach Günter Gerling was also convinced.

It also goes against Unterhaching with Mani Bender (later a professional at Karlsruher SC) or against SpVgg Bayreuth with Armin Eck (FC Bayern, HSV).

“It was really interesting to play against such greats.

You just noticed the routine and class in ex-professionals like Lorant, Veh or in Ampfing at Janzon, ”explains the humble playmaker.

“Franz Schick, a center forward with a goal guarantee, was there in Ampfing, who then turned professional at VfL Bochum.

Franz scored 90 goals in three Bayern League seasons, ”said Fleck - many of them on presentation of the Taufkirchener.

But there are also other encounters, for example with one of his closest friends.

“Kurt Dworschak was an outstanding footballer, he was Bayern League champion with Landshut.

Karsten Wettberg, a shrewd coaching fox, put him on me against us because he knew that we were both good friends and would neutralize each other. "

By the way, money was never the motivation, says Rainer Fleck.

“Sure, the all-in fee was amazing for me as a student.

But for me it was always about football. ”After four successful years in the Bavarian League, he finally played it again with his home club.

Together with Albert Ostermaier, who becomes player-coach, he switched back to the BSG in 1988, which immediately rose from the regional league to the fourth-highest league at the time.

In this Landesliga Süd, Rainer Fleck will play for the BSG for six more years.

“That was a really very successful time,” he says.

It was also to remain the most successful period for the BSG.

"Sportkurier, a sports magazine that was very popular at the time, voted me next to Stefan Reich von Unterhaching as the best player in the Landesliga Süd."

1995 is over.

The BSG has been relegated.

It is true that the stain can be reactivated for a short time.

But he had a lot more fun playing "without compulsion" in the Taufkirchen team.

Before that, he had subordinated everything to football between the ages of 17 and 33.

In order to be so successful at all, Fleck's great willingness to do a little more than the required level in training played the decisive role.

During his time in the district league in Taufkirchen, for example, he trained five to six times a week.

“I went running in the Reckenbacher Wald every day.

With my friend Norbert Heigl we played one-on-one between machines in the parents' company hall or did strength training in his self-built fitness room. "

He has also included unusual training methods in his program.

“For example, Franz Woller, our coach at the time, sent us with the balls into the forest at the Waldbad.

We should dribble around the trees and roots in order to get better technically, ”says Fleck with a smile.

“Discipline and diligence are basic requirements,” he says.

"An extreme joy in football and the luck of being spared major injuries are the keys to my successful career," said the 59-year-old.

"Only after my active time did I tear my cruciate ligament in the AH," he says with a smile.

He always subordinated everything to football.

Holidays and all other plans were always geared towards the game plan, which would not have been possible without the understanding and support of his wife Bärbel and the two children Constanze and Kilian.

Fleck has always enjoyed taking part in charity soccer games, for example when Robert "Terrier" Glasl, a former teammate in the district league team, invited games to the DKMS Foundation.

He also takes part in the annual games of the disabled facility in Algasing with great pleasure.

To see the joy that football evokes in many people, regardless of their skill level, fill them with joy.

But the best thing for him, 45 years later, was the moment when the three specials Manfred, Kurt and Rainer sat together in the stands and watched a game of the second team of the BSG.

Her sons Julius, Thomas, Konstantin and Kilian were in the field.

It was an “indescribable feeling”, “and so now we come full circle.

The friendships made through football are worth more to me than every euro I earn in professional business ”.
