Klaas-Jan Huntelaar has made himself the oldest Schalke Bundesliga goalscorer with his 1-2 goal at Bayer Leverkusen.
The striker who returned to Gelsenkirchen in winter and was in the starting line-up for the first time replaced former goalkeeper Oliver Reck at 37 years and 234 days.
The now 56-year-old scored in a 4-0 win against FC St. Pauli in February 2002 at the age of 36 years and 347 days.
It was Huntelaar's first Bundesliga goal since 2017. Huntelaar now has 83 goals in 178 Bundesliga games, all of them for Schalke 04.
In addition, the Huntelaar goal in Leverkusen was the first goal for the team under Dimitrios Grammozis, who has coached Schalke since the beginning of March and had previously failed to score three times.
But: none of that helped much.
S04 lost the game in Leverkusen (read the game report here), and Schalke's first fall into the second division since 1988 is becoming more and more likely after just one win from the last 43 Bundesliga games.
The deficit on the relegation place amounts to a hopeless 13 points with seven games still outstanding.
