Ruth Chepngetich has set a world record over the half marathon route.
The Kenyan reached the finish line in 1:04:02 hours at the road race in Istanbul on Sunday after 21.1 kilometers and with 29 seconds remained well below the previous record of the Ethiopian Ababel Yeshaneh Birhane.
Behind the 26-year-old Chepngetich, Ethiopian Yalemzerf Yehualaw came second with 1:04:40 hours and cross-country world champion Helen Obiri from Kenya came third in 1:04:51 hours.
Obiri achieved the best time ever for a debutante on this route, the first three of a race stayed under 65 minutes.
The German record holder Melat Kejeta from the Kassel running team finished ninth.
In 1:07:33 hours, the World Cup runner-up achieved the second-best time for a German after her national record (1:05:18).
She tackled the first race after winning her sensational World Championship medal, but couldn't quite keep up the pace on the second half of the track.
Amanal Petros clearly missed the German record
In the men's category, the world record holder Kibiwott Kandie from Kenya won in 59:35 minutes.
His compatriot Geoffrey Kamworor arrived three seconds after him.
The German marathon record holder Amanal Petros from TV Wattenscheid was twelve in 1:03:58 hours and clearly missed the German record targeted for the half marathon: Carsten Eich's still valid German record (60:34 min) is accurate to the day 28 years old.
The 26-year-old Chepngetich is the current world champion over the full marathon route.
In Doha 2019 she won in 2: 32.43 hours.
A year earlier she had already won a silver medal at the team's world championship on the half marathon route in Valencia.
Despite the corona pandemic, 4,000 runners were at the start in Istanbul.
Last November, the organizers held a marathon with 3000 runners in Istanbul.
