Bayern Munich will have to do without Serge Gnabry for the time being.

As the club announced, Gnabry tested positive for the corona virus and is in domestic isolation.

This means that the national player is at least out of the first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals against Paris Saint-Germain.

The game will take place on Wednesday (9 p.m., live ticker SPIEGEL.de; TV: Sky) in Munich.

On Tuesday afternoon, Bayern coach Hansi Flick had reported a sore throat at Gnabry and said that he would "in all likelihood be canceled."

Gnabry was planned as a possible replacement for the injured striker Robert Lewandowski.

If the striker is absent for 14 days, as is usual with other positive corona tests in football, he would also miss the Bundesliga games against Union Berlin, Wolfsburg and Leverkusen as well as the second leg against PSG.

In addition to Gnabry, a number of players tested positive for the corona virus after the international break.

Among others, Vincenzo Grifo from SC Freiburg, like at least five other Italian national players, returned with a corona infection.

Hertha's regular goalkeeper Rune Jarstein was also missing in the derby at Union on Sunday.

International trip caused criticism

The international break in the middle of the third wave of the corona pandemic had already caused criticism before the international trip.

"The whole Bundesliga is thinking about not turning off players," said Frankfurt coach Adi Hütter.

"Basically, I don't think it's particularly intelligent that you play these games."

In the German team there had been a stir about the England legionnaires, who were allowed to play despite the classification of Great Britain as a virus variant area.

Before the DFB-Elf World Cup qualifying game against Iceland, Jonas Hofmann tested positive for the corona virus, he had to leave, as did Marcel Halstenberg, who was classified as a contact person in the first category.

It is not known whether Gnabry became infected with the national team.

On Saturday evening he was used in the top Bundesliga game in Leipzig, and was substituted on in the 72nd minute.

How long Bayern will have to do without Gnabry is also unclear.

Gnabry had already tested positive in October and missed the Champions League games against Atlético Madrid (4-0) and the Bundesliga game against Frankfurt (5-0).

Only then was it found that Gnabry's test was wrong, he had no symptoms.

Gnabry then returned to training.
