The Red Star came very close to repeating its exploit of the previous round against RC Lens (3-2), 5th in Ligue 1. The Audoniens lost this Thursday against Olympique Lyonnais at the end of the session of shots on goal (5-4) during the last match of the knockout stages of the Coupe de France.
Despite two goals behind after defensive errors, they had an incredible second half scoring two goals by Meissa Ba, then Roye before breaking in the penalty shootout.
What you must remember
The Red Star got up to the level of the Lyonnais from the start of the match.
It is even the midfielder Cheikh Ndoye who gets the first big opportunity on a header just above following a good serve from Mayoro Ndoye (20th).
But Thiago Mendes takes advantage of a poor clearance from goalkeeper Adicéam to serve Paqueta who does not miss the windfall (0-1, 27th).
On the engagement, Nathan Bizet narrowly misses the equalizer on a pivot strike flush with the post (28th).
On a deep pass from Mendes, defenders Ghabaoui and Dallet get tangled up and then Adiceam releases the ball on Paqueta who serves Depay in front of the empty goal (0-2, 45th).
Back from the locker room, Lyon missed the final break on a shot from Depay saved on his line by Daillet (55th).
A savage heavy with consequences.
The Red Star remakes its delay in two stages.
First on a shot from Meissa Ba (1-2, 61st), then thanks to a sumptuous free kick in the skylight of Roye (2-2, 74th).
At the end of the game, Ghabaoui saves on his line following a smashed header from Denayer (85th).
During the penalty shoot-out, Audonien Diego Michel is the only player to miss his attempt.
The player: Jimmy Roye
The experienced 32-year-old midfielder, passed through Niort and AC Ajaccio in L 2, showed his usual activity, with great technical accuracy.
His magnificent free kick in the top corner allowed the Red Star to come back to 2-2 and pull off the penalty shootout.
The reactions
Raphaël Adicéam, Audonian goalkeeper:
“We woke up in the second half.
We give them two goals including one from me.
We gave another image after the break.
We gave what we could.
A penalty shootout is cruel.
This is where you have to be decisive.
"
Karl Toko-Ekambi, Lyon striker:
“In our choices, we were less simple.
We complicated things.
We had to go to shift, it's done ”.
The number: 1
After having been irresistible in the Coupe de France with 6 successes in just two months (Le Mée, Ivry, Bobigny, Créteil, Quevilly-Rouen and Lens), the Audoniens - five-time winners of the competition - bowed at the end of the meeting in extremis against Lyon (4th in L 1).
The hundred-year-old club will now be able to devote itself fully to the National Championship where the Audoniens have been losing ground since the start of the year with only one success on the clock in the last 12 games.
Sixth, Patrice Haddad's men are 2 lengths behind the 3rd and jump-off (for the rise in L 2) Orleans.
