The fact that Bielefeld was able to cheer on Friday evening was due to the fact that two Freiburgers hindered each other. Not much else went according to plan for either team, but that didn't seem to be the intention.

Arminia Bielefeld scored an important victory in the relegation battle of the Bundesliga.

Against SC Freiburg, the Ostwestfalen won 1-0 (0-0) and jump to the first non-relegation place, the 14th place in the table.

Masaya Okugawa scored the only goal (68th minute).

Because Cologne and Mainz meet in a direct duel on Sunday evening (6 p.m., live ticker SPIEGEL.de; TV: Sky) Bielefeld secured at least the relegation rank with the victory.

"I think there is still room for improvement in terms of the quality of the game," said Bielefeld sports director Samir Arabi at halftime.

You didn't need to know much more about the first round, only twice it was a bit dangerous.

A direct acceptance by Freiburg's Roland Sallai spun just past the left post (17th), Arminias Fabian Klos failed from a tight angle on keeper Florian Müller, who cleverly shortened the angle (39th).

The second run wasn't necessarily more attractive either.

Freiburg acted with long balls, Bielefeld seemed to be hoping for chance.

And Arminia actually had success with it: After a short corner, Okugawa crossed to the near post, Freiburg's Baptiste Santamaría obstructed his goalkeeper Florian Müller when attempting a header on the first post so badly that the ball bounced into the goal from the unlucky goalkeeper (68. ).

Freiburg was terrifyingly weak, after falling behind, the already many mistakes continued to pile up.

First Müller was lucky in an aerial duel with Joakim Nilsson that the Bielefeld central defender was offside, otherwise another crooked goal would have counted (74th).

Then central defender Keven Schlotterbeck played an unassumed bad pass in his own penalty area in the feet of Doan, which failed due to Müller (80th).

Bielefeld's Andreas Voglsammer also missed the preliminary decision when he shot from around eleven meters in front of Müller to the left of the goal (87th).

Freiburg did not know how to use the chance, after four defeats from the last five games, Freiburg remain in tenth place and with a sufficient lead over the relegation ranks in the middle of the league.
