The Champions League places seem lost for Borussia Dortmund.
In the battle for the Europa League, Dortmund have now won an important victory.
At VfB Stuttgart, coach Erdin Terzić's team won 3-2 (0-1) after a weak first half.
Jude Bellingham (47th), Marco Reus (52nd) and Ansgar Knauff (80th) scored for Dortmund, Saša Kalajdžić (17th minute) and Daniel Didavi (78th) for Stuttgart.
Because Frankfurt won the afternoon's top game against Wolfsburg, Dortmund are still seven points behind their first place in the Champions League with six game days.
But they wouldn't have deserved that with their performance in the first round.
Apart from a powerful, but central shot by Mahmoud Dahoud (14th) and an attempt by Reus (34th), Dortmund managed hardly anything offensively.
The eighth table from Stuttgart before the match day could have moved up to one point on BVB with a win, but was limited to switching situations.
Just like before the opening goal, when Kalajdzic first secured a long shot on the right wing and trotted into the box.
Just arrived there, he headed a flank from Borna Sosa with an arc lamp into the far corner (17th).
According to the TV channel Sky, it is Austria's fifth header goal based on Sosa.
Hummels has to go out at halftime
At the start of the second half, Mats Hummels, who apparently suffered from stomach problems, also had to leave.
Emre Can came for him, who was supposed to be given a break after losing the quarter-final first leg in the Champions League at Manchester City.
Dortmund showed improvement after the break - and equalized: Dahoud led the ball around 20 meters in front of the goal, then played on Reyna in the penalty area, who let it drip to the edge of the penalty area on Bellingham (47.).
The 17-year-old scored his first Bundesliga goal.
A little later Erling Haaland let a pass from Morey in the penalty area wisely run through the legs, Reus shot from the left penalty area into the far corner (52nd), the game was turned.
After falling behind, Stuttgart got better again.
Tanguy Coulibaly initially missed the greatest chance, who failed to score a cross from Daniel Didavi from very close range (66th).
Didavi did better later when he pushed in after a counterattack in front of Hitz (78th);
Bellingham had to be treated off the field of play during the hit.
But Dortmund also had another answer to the setback.
The 19-year-old Knauff dribbled free on the sixteenth and also slipped to his first Bundesliga goal (80th).
