1. FC Köln lost the Sunday evening game on the 28th matchday 2: 3 (1: 1) against FSV Mainz 05.

Jean-Paul Boëtius had put the guests in the lead in the 11th minute, Ondrej Duda equalized with a penalty (43rd minute).

Ellyes Skhiri scored in the 61st minute to make it 2-1 for the hosts, Karim Onisiwo equalized four minutes later.

Leandro Barreiro scored the winning goal in stoppage time.

Due to the defeat and victory of Arminia Bielefeld on Friday evening, FC slipped to 17th place.

The Mainz team are now in 14th place.

A win was a must for FC in the home game against the two points better placed FSV.

The competitors in the relegation battle, Bielefeld and Hertha BSC, had scored points on this match day.

But the hosts put a goal on Bo Svensson's team early on: After a throw-in, Cologne defensive player Noah Katterbach played a bad pass in the build-up.

The ball came to Boëtius via Danny da Costa and Leandro Barreiro, who set it under the crossbar from the edge of the box (11th).

FC replied and had two good chances through Sebastian Andersson (19th and 20th), but the guests could also have scored through Moussa Niakhaté - FC goalkeeper Timo Horn fought off brilliantly with his foot (33rd).

The equalizer then after a penalty kick: Philipp Mwene had got the ball in hand, Duda converted shortly before the break (43.)

The game, which had been respectable for the two teams' standings up until then, was overshadowed by two head injuries: First, Cologne's Kingsley Ehizibue had to stay in the dressing room for the break, and shortly after the change, Mainz's Jonathan Burkardt could no longer play.

The first big chance of the second half was missed by Marius Wolf: the Cologne headed a cross from the right wing from a few meters in the direction of the short corner, but Robin Zentner in the Mainz goal was able to raise his hands and steer the ball to the crossbar (58th).

Shkiri headed it in the 61st minute after a free kick from Jonas Hector, but only four minutes later Onisiwo equalized again after Boëtius had worked (65th).

The winning goal then fell in stoppage time by Barreiro.

With the 2: 3 the FC missed the second victory in the last 19 home games, the Mainz team are the fifth best team in the second half of the season.
