A wonderful goal gave Tottenham the lead against Manchester United - but in the end the Spurs lost anyway. For coach José Mourinho this means a negative record.

Tottenham Hotspur lost the top game of the 31st matchday in the Premier League.

Against Manchester United, the Spurs took the lead after a remarkable combination by Son Heung-min (40th minute).

Fred scored for United to equalize (57th), Edinson Cavani turned the game around (79th).

Mason Greenwod ensured the final score (90 + 6) in stoppage time.

The 1: 3 was an inglorious anniversary from the point of view of Tottenham coach José Mourinho: For the first time in his coaching career, the Portuguese lost ten league games within one season.

Two scenes shaped the first half: a retracted goal and a wonderfully played goal.

The first scene occurred after 34 minutes.

United's Paul Pogba played the ball through the legs of Spurs defender Serge Aurier, straight into Cavani, who scored the alleged 1-0.

For a long time afterwards the game was interrupted because the VAR intervened.

Finally, the referee team suspected an extended arm of Scott McTominay, who had hit Son in the face, the goal didn't count.

The second scene led to the 1-0 for Tottenham.

Tanguy Ndombélé passed the ball sharply to the edge of the box to Harry Kane, then it went fast: Kane played directly into the course of Lucas Moura, who in turn crossed the first contact and used Son, who shot volley into the goal.

That was too fast for the Manchester defensive.

As a result, however, it was mainly the Spurs defense that went too fast.

Cavani failed to Spurs keeper Hugo Lloris, but Fred brought the rebound in the goal (57th).

Shortly afterwards, Lloris saved Tottenham from falling behind with his save against Bruno Fernandes (63rd).

Cavani finally got it with a diving header after a Greenwood cross (79th), Greenwood himself hit Pogbas to 3-1 after preparatory work.

In between, Son (60th) and Kane (73rd) had opportunities for Tottenham.

The slightly more defensive orientation compared to the first half didn't seem to help the Spurs.

Tottenham has already lost 18 points after taking the lead, Opta calculated.

This is also a novelty for Mourinho in his long coaching career, in which he mostly coached teams in a stronger position than the Spurs now.

Including, as is well known, Man United.

In the table, United remains second behind city rivals City (74 points) with 63 points.

The Spurs have lost touch with the Champions League ranks: Five points separate them from fourth place, on which West Ham United is surprisingly.

The Hammers had beaten Leicester City 3-2 in the afternoon.

In fifth place is Chelsea, trained by Thomas Tuchel, and Jürgen Klopps Liverpool on six, followed by Spurs, who could even be ousted by Everton during the course of the day.

The 2019 Champions League finalists are threatened with a season without a European Cup.
