Tennis: Gaël Monfils package in Monte-Carlo

Still without a win in 2021, Gaël Monfils will still have to wait before returning to competition.

The French announced it bluntly on Twitter this Sunday morning.

“Unfortunately, I have to retire from the Masters 1000 in Monte-Carlo.

I have been feeling discomfort at the bottom of the calf for ten days or so, it got worse yesterday (Saturday) during my last training.

"The" Monf "was indeed already on site, at the Monte-Carlo Country Club, since the tournament begins this Sunday.

The number 10 seed was due to face Spaniard Pablo Andujar in the first round.

After additional examinations in Monaco, the medical profession did not agree to the player's participation.

"I had an ultrasound which confirmed the extent of the injury," confirms Monfils.

I therefore see myself in the obligation to postpone my return to competition.

However, I remain positive and optimistic for the future and will start today on a specific treatment protocol to come back as quickly as possible.

The troubles therefore continue for Gaël Monfils, no longer seen on a court since February 8.

After a surprising change of coach, the Parisian played only two games, for two defeats: a first in the ATP Cup against the Italian Matteo Berrettini, before an unfortunate setback at the Australian Open against the Finn Emil Ruusuvuori.

The first Grand Slam of the year was also concluded in tears for the French, in total lack of confidence.

Last week, however, he had a happy and (perhaps) mentally decisive event for the rest of the season: Monfils and his companion, Ukrainian player Elina Svitolina (world No. 5), announced their future marriage.
