Corona hardly allows running competitions this year either.

Markus Brennauer is not deterred by this.

The Penzberger looks for special running challenges.

He has now set a record for one.

Penzberg - Markus Brennauer's three sports comrades had positioned themselves exactly right.

At the end of the ascent at the Buchheim Museum with an altitude of 30 meters, the trio, including club colleague Sascha Pirke, stood to cheer on the runner of TSV Penzberg.

The support after 31 kilometers came at just the right time, because at this stage of his run around Lake Starnberg he had some problems.

"My legs were getting more and more tired and I was a little afraid of the longest ascent of the route at the Buchheim Museum," reported the Penzberg.

He was then inspired by the applause of the three.

In the end, the 41-year-old managed a remarkable result: Brennauer completed the 49.3-kilometer route in 3:07:04 hours.

With this, the secondary school teacher set up a new “Fastest known time” (FKT).

FKT stands in athletes' circles for the fastest recorded time for a certain distance;

There is a large online database for this.

Florian Neuschwander held the record for this run so far with 3:13:56 hours;

it ran in April 2016.

Brennauer much faster than ultra run ace Neuschwander

At exactly 9.25 a.m. Brennauer started clockwise around the lake at the Starnberg train station.

From the beginning he had to fight against extremely strong winds.

Nevertheless, the Penzberger started "quite aggressively in his project", as he called it.

He covered the first kilometer in 3:36 minutes.

This was followed by the two bridges in the Starnberg harbor on Nepomukweg with many steps.

"After the steps, I found my rhythm on the east bank and was on the way much faster than planned," he reported.

He completed the first ten kilometers in 37:20 minutes.

On the way through Ammerland and Ambach the wind got stronger and stronger.

“Sometimes I was really thrown off the track and had to run bends on the dead straight route myself.

I had to constantly apply pressure not to slow down because of the headwind. ”After 19 kilometers, his wife Conny Lechner-Brennauer was ready to hand over food.

When consuming a carbohydrate gel, Markus Brennauer choked and had to stop for a moment.

This short compulsory break only cost him a few seconds.

After 20 kilometers the clock showed 1:14:40 hours.

The sun slowly developed its power, so that Brennauer got rid of his running sweater.

Half was done.

“Through Seeshaupt I felt for the first time that my legs were getting a little tired.

I had already run out of four minutes on Florian Neuschwander's FKT, but there were slight doubts, ”said the TSV runner.

At Seeseiten Castle after 27 kilometers, he was handed his next bottle.

He took several kilometers to drink.

The reason for this was that a slight feeling of fullness had spread in the stomach, which would later cause him even greater problems.

When he passed Bernried, his running friends were ready to cheer.

Club mate Sascha Pirke actually wanted to accompany Brennauer for 20 kilometers, but severe back pain had ruined the plan.

Motivated by his friends, Brennauer picked up speed again, with the sloping terrain helping him towards Tutzing.

The wind also eased a little.

At the ice cream parlor in Tutzing - 37 kilometers were done - first his wife and 500 meters further his three friends stood.

"This support was sorely necessary because I got a slight stitch in my side," said Brennauer.

To be on the safe side, he reduced his speed to 15 km / h because he hadn't eaten or drunk anything.

As a result, the stitch disappeared again.

"From Garatshausen Castle on, I was sure that I would undercut Florian's FKT," said Markus Brennauer.

Even if he had run the last ten kilometers in 45 minutes, it would have been enough.

With the certainty, Brennauer could "now enjoy the way past the rose island".

From the Possenhofen Castle, he switched from the hiking trail to the road, only four kilometers lay ahead of him.

His average leveled off at 3:45 minutes per kilometer, using the slightly sloping terrain in the direction of the Starnberg lake promenade to increase the speed further.

"I was amazed at how good my body felt over the last few kilometers," said Brennauer.

In the end, he had beaten the previous record of Germany's best ultra runner by almost seven minutes.

Neuschwander was not running with full commitment at the time, as he revealed to Brennauer in November 2020.

However, the Penzberger was not quite at the limit either.

Only a week before that he had decided to take the action.

“I noticed during training that I was in a really good mood.

In addition, it is becoming more and more likely that there will be no competitions in spring and summer in 2021, ”he explains his motivation for the run.
