As in the three previous electoral processes (2017, 2013 and 2009), only the current president ran as a candidate. Members have not gone to the polls since 2006

Florentino Pérez extended his term at the helm of Real Madrid until 2025. As expected since last Saturday, no other candidate was presented and the Electoral Board proclaimed the 74-year-old businessman at midnight from Monday to Tuesday as the club's top leader.

It is his sixth term in two stages: 2000-2006 and 2009 so far.

For the fourth time in a row (2009, 2013, 2017 and 2021), there was only one applicant.

Since 2006, the partners of the entity do not go to the polls.

  • Florentino Pérez, the only candidate in the Madrid elections after Enrique Riquelme gave up

This time, the businessman from the photovoltaic sector Enrique Riquelme (Cox, Alicante, 32 years old) had shown his interest in attending the appointment.

However, last Saturday, hours before the classic, he issued a note in which he announced that he would not do it.

In his writing he excused himself in the lack of time.

"Due to the reduced deadlines established by the current Board of Directors and the Electoral Board, they make it impossible to present the full candidacy in which he had been working and ensure a campaign in which he can really explain the project to all partners."

He added, however, that his resignation is not final and that he will continue working for the following elections.

Pérez had activated the electoral machinery on April 1, Maundy Thursday, weeks before what he had done on the last two occasions, in which he was also the only candidate.

In 2017, the process began on June 8 and in 2013, on May 20.

Sources close to the Madrid leadership pointed out that this year's European Championship, from June 11 to July 11, made it difficult to carry out the hypothetical elections in June, and that the renovation works of the Bernabéu required being able to make decisions about the venue as soon as possible.

Riquelme had guaranteed that he met the strict requirements to run for president.

In 2009, when Florentino Pérez returned to the top of the club, he began a process of reform of the statutes that were finally approved in 2012 in an Assembly of Compromisario Members.

This modification toughened the conditions.

From then on, it takes 20 years of membership instead of ten and that the pre-endorsement of 15% of the budget of the entity of each candidate is backed by personal assets and not third parties, and by a Spanish entity, never foreign.

The endorsement

On this occasion, the amount for Riquelme or another applicant was estimated at 123.8 million.

In Pérez's case, however, his board did not need to present any pre-guarantee, since under his mandate the club has accumulated 399 million benefits since 2009 and, according to LaLiga sources, the regulation establishes a "guarantee compensation mechanism" .

The endorsement point is the one that has usually restricted the chances of having more candidates the most.

In Barcelona it is also necessary (as established by the Sports Law of 1990 and the royal decree on sports limited companies of 1999), although with some difference compared to Madrid.

In the white club you have to do it at the moment when a person is a candidate while in the Barça entity it is required only a posteriori.

In addition, it is not necessary to guarantee the guarantee with personal assets.

In fact, Laporta was endorsed by entrepreneurs and funds that he did not have to reveal before or after he was president.

Florentino Pérez thus continues at the helm of Real Madrid at a time when he must complete the remodeling works of the Santiago Bernabéu and face the economic losses caused by the pandemic.

In the sports field, the name of the club has been linked in recent weeks to the group of teams that would be interested in incorporating Kylian Mbappé (PSG) and Erling Haaland (Dortmund).
