A senior Japanese ruling party has said there is a possibility that the summer Olympics will be postponed due to an increase in corona cases, with only 100 days left to open.
Toshihiro Nikai, the general secretary of the Liberal Democratic Party, said that if it became impossible to hold the Olympics, they would have to cancel it.
“What’s the point of the Olympics spreading the corona?” Nikai said.
Earlier in the day, Taro Kono, the Tsar of vaccines and minister of administrative reform said he would probably have to hold the games in Japan without an audience.
Japan has taken steps to prevent the virus in six provinces, including Tokyo and Osaka.
In Tokyo, which has a population of close to 14 million, 729 new cases of corona were discovered on Thursday, the most in more than two months.
Tokyo Gov. Eurico Koika said she would consider asking the government to declare a state of emergency in case the steps taken do not help.
Japan wants to make progress in completing preparations for the Olympics, said government spokesman Katzunovo Kato.
As you may recall, the Olympics were supposed to take place last summer, but have already been postponed for a year due to the eruption of the corona.
