FC Schalke 04 have to leave the Bundesliga after 33 years.
The Gelsenkirchner lost at Arminia Bielefeld 0: 1 (0: 0) and can therefore no longer mathematically reach the relegation rank 16.
It is the club's fourth relegation to the Bundesliga after 1981, 1983 and 1988.
Schalke coach Dimitrios Grammozis brought in Gonçalo Paciência and Shkodran Mustafi two new ones for his starting line-up, while his counterpart Frank Kramer only changed once after three competitive games without a defeat.
At the beginning there were only opportunities for the hosts: Manuel Prietl tested Schalke goalkeeper Ralf Fährmann with a long shot (9th minute), then Fabian Klos and Ritsu Doan gave a double chance (13th).
Andreas Voglsammer also had the lead twice (29th and 35th).
And Schalke?
After the surprising Cologne win against RB Leipzig it was clear that they would absolutely need a success to prevent relegation.
For that, the bottom of the table acted offensively, however, far too courageous and harmless.
Why Schalke 04 are relegated earlier than ever before was exemplified in the 50th minute: Omar Mascarell threw the ball in the middle of his own half, Bielefeld's attacker Fabian Klos made the necessary space for a long-range shot, the keeper ferryman through the Slipping hands - the lead for the hosts.
The Schalke Malick Thiaw saw yellow-red in the 71st minute, Fabian Klos missed the great opportunity to 2-0 in the 80th minute - he shot a penalty weakly in the middle of the goal, so that Fährmann was able to fend off without any problems.
For Arminia it was an important victory in the relegation battle.
With 30 points they move up to 14th place for the time being, but have played two more games than Mainz and Hertha BSC behind them.
