An unprecedented violent incident took place last night (Tuesday) in Germany when Schalke players were attacked by the fans as soon as they returned from Bielefeld after being relegated.

Gelsenkirchen police confirmed the allegations after social media footage showed fans chasing several club players near the Blues' home stadium and although police were unable to confirm the video's credibility, sources told ESPN that these scenes did take place.

A 1-0 loss to Arminia Bielefeld reduced Schalke to the second division, for the first time in 30 years.

"500 to 600 people were waiting for the team near the Valentins Arena. When the players left the team bus, eggs were thrown at them and they were verbally abused," local police said.

"The police were in place with a strong force and managed to prevent further escalation."

Schalke issued an official statement saying: "With all the understandable frustration and anger due to relegation to the Bundesliga 2, the club will never receive a physical attack from its players and staff and that is exactly what happened tonight through an act of individuals."

Simultaneously with the sadness and rage on the blue side of town, city rivals Dortmund fans celebrated until the wee hours of the night and fired fireworks.
