SV Werder Bremen also lost the relegation battle thriller against Mainz 05 with 0: 1, setting a new negative record for the club and more than ever in the relegation swamp.

The game report of the DeichStube.

Bremen - Now she has finally returned to Osterdeich, the sheer fear of relegation, with which

Werder Bremen

actually wanted nothing to do this season. But after the 0: 1 (0: 1) defeat against the direct competitor Mainz 05, the team of coach Florian Kohfeldt is deep in the table cellar again. In addition, the sixth defeat in a row meant a new

negative record

for the club. Mainz 'winning goal was scored by Adam Szalai, and the video referee had caused great outrage from Bremen on the other side.

Compared to the 1: 4 bankruptcy in Dortmund, Kohfeldt had made three changes in his starting line-up.

After a three competitive break due to a broken toe, striker Niclas Füllkrug returned to the starting line-up - as did left-back Ludwig Augustinsson, who had recently been out with a thigh strain.

In addition, Josh Sargent was allowed to play again from the start.

"There's a lot going on for us today, and I like games like this," Kohfeldt said shortly before kick-off - but the coach's good sound should soon be muffled.

Werder Bremen goal against Mainz 05 withdrawn by VAR - Christian Groß: "A clear goal"

After a good initial phase, in which

Werder Bremen

clearly had more of the game, there was an ice-cold shower in the 16th minute. Because Milos Veljkovic stumbled without contact with the opponent, Karim Onisiwo suddenly had a free run, failed from a tight angle to goalkeeper Jiri Pavlenka - but Adam Szalai only had to push the rebound over the line, 1-0 for Mainz. Particularly annoying for Werder: Actually, the home side should have been in charge by this point in time. Milot Rashica and Maximilian Eggestein had miserably messed up a 3-1 counter-situation after a Mainz corner kick (9th).

After the deficit, it was clear to Bremen that the goal from

Mainz 05

had really hurt. It took a few minutes before the team found their way back to the front. Shortly after Pavlenka had parried an Onisiwo finish (28th), it was Eggestein who gave Füllkrug a great chance with a trick pass. The striker's weak finish was ultimately not a problem for Mainz goalkeeper Robin Zentner (31st). On the other hand, Pavlenka had to stretch a lot more to prevent Leandro Barreiro from going 2-0 (38th). Shortly afterwards there was a great excitement scene in front of the Mainzer Tor.

After a corner kick from Augustinsson, Kevin Möhwald Zentner spitted the ball away between his open arms, whereupon Dominik Kohr shot Sargent - and it suddenly stood 1: 1 (44th). The joy of

SV Werder Bremen

quickly turned into sheer horror, because after the intervention of the

video referee (VAR) Felix Zwayer

, referee Marco Fritz took the hit back - a wrong decision because the ball was free between hundredweight's arms. In such cases, the rulebook only sees a foul if the goalkeeper is clearly in control of the ball. "He had problems controlling the ball, he didn't have it securely in his hand," said Werder's yellow-banned Christian Groß at the Sky microphone during the half-time break: "It was a clear goal for me."

Werder Bremen also loses the relegation battle thriller against Mainz 05

After the change, it took just three minutes before the guests almost made the preliminary decision. Marco Friedl completely lost his bearings in the penalty area against Szalai, whereupon the Mainz attacker hit the crossbar with elemental force from the spin (48th). A scene that marked the beginning of a wild phase of the game in which both teams came up with opportunities. Eggestein put a low shot just next to the goal (58th), Pavlenka saved again strongly against Onisiwo (59th), before Füllkrug failed to Zentner (60th). After that, the pace flattened out again, which

Mainz 05

seemed to suit. Nevertheless, Kohfeldt waited a long time before he brought new impulses from the bank. Only in the 78th minute came Davie Selke (for Füllkrug) and Romano Schmid (for Friedl).

Werder Bremen

now switched to a back four, which should provide more staff and penetration at the front.

The hosts kept running to the empty Weser Stadium, but either didn't have the brilliant idea in front of the goal or simply made too many mistakes in their actions.

In the 85th minute, Kohfeldt then sent Eren Dinkci (for Möhwald) onto the pitch - in the hope that the 19-year-old might write his football tale from the first leg again.

Which he didn't succeed.

Instead,

Mainz 05

could have increased to 2-0 in the end.

>>>

Final whistle!

Werder lost 1-0 to their direct rivals Mainz 05.

Adam Szalai scored in the first half after a mistake by Milos Veljkovic.

Josh Sargent's avoidable equalizer was wrongly disallowed.

In the end, Werder was still too ineffective offensively.

Four game days before the end, you are now back in the middle of a relegation battle.

90th min + 4:

Another minute.

Only long things.

There is one last corner.

Pavlenka comes forward.

90.Min + 3:

Super shot from Schmid.

Just over it!

About two minutes left on the clock.

90.Min + 1:

Glatzel has the chance to make everything clear and shoots half a meter past the goal.

There is a total of five minutes on top.

89.Min:

Cross to Gebre Selassie.

Although he is strong at the head, but does not get any force behind the ball. Kick off hundredweight.

87.Min:

Svensson brings Stöger and Burkardt for Onisiwo and Boetius and takes seconds off the clock again.

87.Min:

Mwene from the second row.

Just over.

Where is Werder's final offensive?

85th min:

Can history repeat itself?

Eren Dinkci comes in for Kevin Möhwald.

83.Min:

Robin Zentner plays for time and sees yellow.

83.Min:

Rashica finally has some space on the right, but his flank gets stuck again.

That is just not enough!

80.Min:

Werder tries again with half-field flanks.

As so often, Stefan Bell can only smile tiredly about it.

78th Min:

Now Kohfeldt changes.

Schmid and Selke still have about 15 minutes to at least help shape the balance.

Füllkrug and Friedl are outside.

77th min:

Augustinsson kicks corner number five and six into the Mainz penalty area.

The result remains unsatisfactory.

76.Min:

The 05er stand safe and defend skillfully.

Werder can't think of anything.

A reflection of the last five games.

74th Min:

Glatzel and Latza come for Kohr and Szalai.

When does Florian Kohfeldt actually want to change?

73rd Min:

The Bremen attack game remains to be calculated.

Mainz currently has no problems.

72nd min:

Mainz demands a penalty after Eggestein supposedly pushed.

Fortunately, Fritz waves him straight away.

70.Min:

Bo Svensson prepares the first change of the game.

67.Min:

After the following free kick, two Bremer have the chance to pull off from the second row.

But since they interfere with each other, nothing can be counted out of it.

66.Min

:

Boetius brutally fouls Eggestein.

He doesn't have to complain about the yellow card.

65th Min:

When does Florian Kohfeldt react?

The offensive forces Schmid, Osako, Selke and first leg scorer Dinkci are waiting on the bench for their use.

63rd Min:

Sargent takes out his frustration on Brosinski and gets in too hard.

The American rightly sees the yellow card.

61.Min:

Wild phase now!

The rows of defenses on both sides are springy.

Eggestein had just passed the ball past hundredweight.

The angle was then too acute.

On the other hand, Werder cannot win an important duel in the person of Moisander and is again in trouble.

It still remains at 0: 1 from Bremen's point of view.

60th Min:

Onisiwo!

Werder is sleeping in the back again, Pavlenka has to save!

59.Min:

Sargent plays directly on Rashica, who is marching off to the left.

The Kosovar stuck to two major Mainz defenders.

He has to try to give the ball back before he blindly runs into it.

57.Min:

Augustinsson hits the wall that leads to the corner.

The Swede also takes the corner.

This standard also remains unused.

56.Min:

Eggestein is fouled about 20 meters in front of Bell's goal.

There is a direct free kick.

54th Min:

That was not to be expected.

Veljkovic looks pretty battered, but still walks back to his position.

He obviously wants to do something well.

Hopefully not a false ambition.

53rd Min:

Veljkovic is still outside.

The physios are obviously of the opinion that the central defender can continue.

50.Min:

Veljkovic remains in a collision in a header duel with Barreiro.

The Serb immediately bleeds profusely, so that a worse injury must be assumed.

Felix Agu is getting ready.

48th Min: Latte!

Adam Szalai makes Friedl look old and plucks down a flank before putting the ball on the lower edge of the crossbar with Karacho.

Luck for Werder!

47.Min:

By the way, both coaches have not changed.

Werder Bremen against 1. FSV Mainz 05 in the live ticker: VAR prevents Werder hits shortly before the break

46.Min:

Let's go on!

How do the green-whites react after the wrong decision shortly before the break whistle?

Halftime!

Werder go into the break with a 0-1 deficit!

Florian Kohfeldt is served and goes directly to referee Marco Fritz!

But it's no use.

Despite a committed start, it is the guests who took the lead after a slip by Veljkovic.

45.Min + 2:

It is questionable why the VAR Felix Zwayer intervenes at all.

It wasn't a clear mistake.

On the contrary.

Marco Fritz had even given the gate first.

45th Min +1: The referee looks at the gate again after VAR intervention and does not give the gate.

From our point of view, a clear wrong decision!

Hundreds of weight did not get the ball right after a corner, Möhwald spitzelt the ball away and via detours to Sargent, who scores to equalize.

The decision is still foul and no goal!

That is as wrong as it is bitter for Werder!

45th min: The ball is in the goal!

The Werder goal music is on!

But there are immediately loud protests from Mainz because Hundreds of dollars have already had the ball in their hands and then it is said to have been fouled.

44.Min:

Füllkrug puts a ball on Rashica, who pulls directly from the half-right position.

The ball is deflected.

Corner!

42nd min:

Füllkrug had the greatest Werder chance in the 31st minute!

The last injured hope is not yet in the game in several situations.

41.Min:

Friedl changes sides to Gebre Selassie, well worth seeing.

The decisive passes in the last third come too seldom.

38.Min:

While Sargent cannot accept the ball, Mainz countered!

A nice back pass from Onisiwo is used by Barreiro.

Although the Luxembourger shoots himself, Pavlenka has to stretch out and clear the corner.

There is then no longer any danger from this.

35.Min:

Werder is slowly approaching again.

With the exception of Pavlenka, all field players can currently be found in the Mainz half.

Werder Bremen against 1. FSV Mainz 05 in the live ticker: Niclas Füllkrug missed the balance

31.Min:

Brilliant pass from Eggestein with the outside instep into the gap on Füllkrug (nice pun!).

He cannot use the chance and places his shot centrally on hundredweight.

That was more of a return than anything else!

28.Min:

St. Juste has fouled Augustinsson, so that it comes directly to the next standard situation in a similar position.

This time a free-kick flank sails into the penalty area, where only a Mainz player gets the ball.

26.Min

:

Rashica is put in an interesting position by Boetius.

He takes the free kick himself, but places the game device over the goal.

23.Min

:

In the blitz table, Mainz have now passed Werder.

If you consider that the Hessians even have a catch-up game against Hertha up their sleeves, the Bremen team should work on the result as quickly as possible.

20.Min:

At the moment, neither team can find any structure in their game.

The backlog certainly does something in the minds of the Kohfeldt-Elf.

18.Min:

How do the people of Bremen react after this buck?

It couldn't be more unnecessary.

Werder Bremen against 1. FSV Mainz 05 in the live ticker: Milos Veljkovic fails - Adam Szalai executed

16.Min:

An individual mistake leads to a goal again!

Milos Veljkovic almost certainly has the ball 25 meters in front of the goal, but slips away.

Onisiwo is the beneficiary.

The Austrian picks up the ball, drives the ball into the penalty area, closes and fails, but Szalai, who started with Pavlenka, is ready after one of Pavlenka's defensive feet and slides into the Mainz lead without difficulty.

16.Min: Goal for Mainz!

The guests lead 1-0 in Bremen!

13.Min:

Möhwald tries from a distance, but is blocked.

12. Min:

The first few minutes promise an exciting game!

Werder got off to a better start, but Mainz also had an opportunity.

10.Min

:

Brosinski on the other side with a flat flank towards Szalai.

The Hungarian can't get it.

That was dangerous!

8.Min:

For the first time, the Mainz team is longer in the Bremen half.

Immediately a corner kick jumps out.

Brosinski's corner leads to a Bremen counterattack, which Rashica and Co. have to make more of.

A three-on-one situation is too easily wasted.

5th min:

Birthday child Ludwig Augustinsson falls in the penalty area and calls for a penalty.

The TV images do not provide any clear information as to whether there was any contact.

So instead of a penalty there is a corner.

This brings nothing.

4.Min:

Werder has been defending concentrated so far and has won a lot of balls in midfield.

2. Min:

As expected, Werder runs in a 3-5-2 system when they attack themselves.

Josh Sargent takes the part on the ten.

Werder Bremen against 1. FSV Mainz 05 in the live ticker: kick-off in the Weserstadion!

1. Min:

Let's go Rashica toast!

8:30 p.m.:

The choice of side has been decided.

Werder plays on the orphaned east curve in the first half.

8:25 pm:

The referee is called Marco Fritz today.

He has not whistled Werder before this season.

8:20 pm:

But enough talk!

Today it applies.

After the game, no fan would like to hear anything about “positive approaches” or even “it doesn't work that way”!

The performance has to be right today and then you will score against Mainz.

8:16 pm:

“We can achieve something.

It's about a lot, ”said Florian Kohfeldt during the week.

In the Sky interview, he also mentions that it's not about everything today, but about a lot.

He is right!

8:11 p.m.:

So basically you don't have to separately mention what is going on today!

If you lose again, it will be even tighter than before, according to yesterday's results.

Already now there is no trace of the calm at the beginning of March, when you already thought you were safe.

8:07 p.m.:

Let's take another look at the table: Five game days before the end, Werder are 13th with 30 points. Bielefeld is now level on points.

Mainz (15th) can even overtake Bremen with a win today.

Hertha and Cologne occupy places 16 and 17 with 26 points each.

Hertha is still playing a catch-up game against Mainz.

8:04 p.m.:

Two facts make hope above all: On the one hand, Werder has scored eight points in nine duels against direct relegation competitors this season.

On the other hand, the Werder fans should still have positive memories of the first leg.

A certain Eren Dinkci made the redeeming 1-0 for the green-whites shortly before the end, as a joker, in his first Bundesliga game.

The 19-year-old German-Turk is sitting on the bench again today.

7:59 p.m.:

In the

event of

another Werder defeat, it sets a historical negative record that should be prevented.

7:55 pm:

The momentum still speaks for the 05er!

From the last five duels before the game against Hertha BSC, which was canceled due to the corona, the Mainz team, which has already been written off on many occasions, collected eleven points.

In comparison, Werder haven't scored a single point in the last five games.

Club negative record set!

7:51 p.m.:

And Mainz?

Bo Svensson's team manages without a real goal getter.

Quaison, Onisiwo, Stöger and Niakhaté are the most accurate kickers in the current squad, each with three goals this season.

Adam Szalai (a total of 52 Bundesliga goals) is still waiting for his first goal of the season.

7.44 p.m.:

Sturmhoffnung Füllkrug, on the other hand, is back again.

After breaking his toe, the ex-Hanoverian is hoping for his sixth goal of the season today.

7:41 p.m.:

Leonardo Bittencourt was replaced on Sunday before half-time.

He is plagued by a capsular injury in his left ankle.

Downtime still unclear.

7.35 p.m.:

Florian Kohfeldt makes three changes today compared to the 1: 4 defeat at BVB.

Sargent and Füllkrug are back, replacing the injured Bittencourt and Yuya Osako, who is taking a seat on the bench for the time being.

Christian Groß is serving a yellow card suspension today.

Ludwig Augustinsson is in the starting line-up for him.

7.30 p.m .:

Ex-Bremer Levin Öztunali and the offensive players Quaison and Glatzel are waiting for their work on the Mainz bench.

7:29 p.m.:

The Rheinhessen from Mainz send these eleven to the field: Zentner, St Juste, Bell, Brosinski, Niakhaté, Mwene, Boetius, Kohr, Barreiro, Onisiwo, Szalai.

Werder Bremen against 1. FSV Mainz 05 in the live ticker: Florian Kohfeldt sends Niclas Füllkrug to the field from the start

7.27 p.m.:

The following players from the bank can still bring a breath of fresh air during the game: Zetterer, Agu, Erras, Schmid, Mbom, Bargfrede, Osako, Selke, Dinkci.

7.25 p.m.: The Bremen line-up: Pavlenka - Veljkovic, Moisander, Friedl - Gebre Selassie, Augustinsson, Möhwald, Eggestein, Rashica - Füllkrug, Sargent

7:21 p.m.:

Welcome from the Deichstube!

English week in the Bundesliga.

Werder Bremen welcomes 1. FSV Mainz 05 to the relegation duel in the Weser Stadium.

Werder Bremen against Mainz 05 - the preliminary report:

Relaxation or relegation alarm: Florian Kohfeldt encourages dented SV Werder Bremen for the stress test against Mainz 05

He must be a little masochistic, this

Florian Kohfeldt

. Before a game that is

almost overloaded

with

fear of relegation

and in which his team goes after five defeats in a row with bruised knees, bloody nose and one or the other bump, the

SV Werder Bremen

coach shows

his face full of expectation. "Somehow awesome" he thinks what is waiting for him on Wednesday evening. “It's about a lot, that's nice,” says Kohfeldt before the home game against

Mainz 05

(8.30 p.m. in the live ticker of the

DeichStube

*).

Bremen - If you take your eyes off the table, you could be

seduced

by the positive energy that

Florian Kohfeldt shows off

to believe that it is about making it into the Europa League or about goals that are even more tempting. It is

Werder Bremen

against

Mainz 05

again a game against relegation, against failure.

Kind of cool?

Somehow not!

Of course, it is clear what Kohfeldt wants to convey with his attitude: Just don't develop nerve flutter, have pleasure instead of fear.

That is what he wants to set an example with his coaching team.

That is what he wants to see from his players and will even make it the “criterion for the line-up” of SV Werder: “I like these games.

I hope that my players see it the same way and know that it is so.

Those who like games like this will play too. "

Werder Bremen against Mainz 05: Florian Kohfeldt is looking forward to the thrill of the relegation battle

You could also say: if you like games like this, you are in

very good hands

at

Werder Bremen

. Because there have been many of these trendsetting games in recent years. Not all of them were won, and Werder's shared history with

Mainz 05, which

is

very special in this regard,

is already sufficiently told. Now, on matchday 30, the next chapter is being written. And

Florian Kohfeldt

is looking forward to the thrill. Maybe he can only do this because the foundation of his anticipation is optimism. That optimism that has flown around his ears a number of times, which is sometimes even interpreted by his critics as a window dressing, which nevertheless does not leave him.
