The great Real Madrid, which ruled the Champions League for years, is in the semifinals without any chance against the dominance of Chelsea. An era at Real is drawing to a close.

Scene of the game:

Actually an unspectacular scene, but so meaningful.

There was still about a quarter of an hour left to play, when Reals Toni Kroos drove the Chelsea striker Christian Pulisic, who had just been substituted, in the legs, just as unmotivated as it was unabashed.

At the center circle, without need.

The noble technician Kroos, who didn't know what else to do that evening but to extend the tackle.

Result of the game:

After the 1-1 draw in the first leg, Chelsea won the second leg against Real Madrid 2-0 with goals from Timo Werner (28th minute) and Mason Mount (85th) and made a well-deserved entry into the English final against Manchester City .

You can find the detailed match report here.

Melancholy of the game:

Real Madrid have won the Champions League four times under coach Zinédine Zidane.

Karim Benzema, Casemiro, Toni Kroos, Luca Modric, Sergio Ramos, Marcelo - they were there in almost every triumph.

All the sadder to see how Los Blancos couldn't wriggle out of this defeat.

It was as if the proud Spanish Armada were going out to sea one last time.

Knowing full well that you have no chance against the sleek, fast boats of the English.

Thomas Tuchel goes Francis Drake.

The first half:

Chelsea dominated from the start, has chances, has an offside goal from Timo Werner, has everything under control and yet lucky not to fall behind.

Karim Benzema, who else, had pulled from the edge of the penalty area, and goalkeeper Edouard Menydy prevented the 0: 1 with a world-class parade.

In return, Werner completed the lead after the best preparatory work by N'Golo Kanté and Kai Havertz.

Which then hardly wobbled.

The second half:

Chelsea combined, Chelsea storms, Chelsea has every chance in the world. But both Mount, as well as Havertz, Werner and Kanté keep the Madrid hope alive. Real goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, formerly under contract with Chelsea, does the rest with great rescue efforts to keep the tension up to the 85th minute. Then Mount dissolves them with his gate.

Player of the game:

"If there are any questions, best to Kanté," says Sky commentator Wolf Fuss in a familiar manner. But the man is right. The Frenchman in midfield is the outstanding player. Havertz is good, Rüdiger is good, Mount is good. But this Kanté, the 2018 world champion, is the brain and heart of this team. And when it comes down to it, Kanté is a little better than usual, then the heart beats even faster, then the brain is even more alert. That's what makes the great players.

Family

duel of

the game:

Edoard Mendy for Chelsea, Ferland Mendy, his cousin, at Real Madrid. It is not often the case that the balance of power and strength in a family is as clearly distributed as it was on this evening. Edouard can go to the next family celebration, when Corona is over, very relaxed.

Winner of the game:

In December, Thomas Tuchel was sacked at Paris Saint-Germain, the club he led to the Champions League final last year. PSG failed in the semi-finals on Tuesday, and Tuchel confidently made it to the final with Chelsea, his new project. Now the tactic-obsessed can get the salt shaker out again and push it back and forth until the final day to think about how he can defeat Pep Guardiola and Manchester City. Dress rehearsal on Saturday in the Premier League (6.30 p.m., live ticker SPIEGEL.de; TV: Sky).

Knowledge of the game:

The endgame will be in English. City versus Chelsea. On Thursday, Manchester United and Arsenal FC can also make the Europa League final perfect. For the fact that England no longer really belongs to Europe, they have mastered European football quite well again.
