Sporting came one step closer to claiming the Portuguese Football League title for the first time in 19 years, when they beat Rio Ave 2-0 at home.
With its third successive victory, Sporting raised its score to 79 points from 31 games and is nine points ahead of Porto, who faces a tough test against rivals Benfica tomorrow.
Pedro Gonçalves, the team's top scorer, successfully took a penalty, raising his tally to 18 league goals this season and giving coach Robin Amorim's side the lead in the 35th minute.
Striker Paulinho added the second goal midway through the second half, one minute after Tarantini was sent off the Rio Ave midfielder.
