How far will the war between UEFA and the Super League go?

According to ESPN, the body chaired by Aleksander Ceferin has initiated legal proceedings to try to sanction four of the twelve training clubs of the dissident competition: Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, Juventus Turin and AC Milan.

The Spanish and Italian giants are the only founders not to have publicly declared their desire to exit the Super League.

To implement the threats of sanction, mentioned from the day of creation by the boss of UEFA, the parent company of European football relies on its own regulations.

In its statutes, see article 51 on “prohibited relationships”: “Groupings or alliances between UEFA member associations or between leagues or clubs directly or indirectly affiliated to different UEFA member associations cannot be trained without the permission of UEFA ”.

Two years of exclusion from European competitions

Still according to ESPN, on the basis of this regulation, the four clubs concerned risk two years of exclusion from European competitions. For the eight other founding clubs (Atlético de Madrid, Inter Milan, Manchester City, Manchester United, Arsenal, Tottenham, Liverpool, Chelsea), a fine would be sufficient in the eyes of UEFA. In Italy, the "Corriere dello Sport" believes that these threats have only one goal: the dissolution of the Super League organization.

If the two-year ban does materialize, the clubs will suffer significant economic consequences. Semi-finalist of the Champions League this season, Real Madrid will receive around 100 million euros from UEFA. Questions leading to TV rights for European competitions could then be raised. In France, Canal + and BeIN Sport have acquired the broadcasting rights until June 2024 for C1 and C3. Could they turn against UEFA if four of Europe's most important clubs don't take part? No element of answer to date.

For their part, the founding clubs of the Super League have always claimed not to be afraid of sanctions, whether they concern clubs or players. “We worked with dozens of lawyers,” a source familiar with the matter told us a few days ago.
