Barcelona needed a win, but the Catalans couldn't get past a draw against leaders Atlético. That was also because goalkeeper Jan Oblak prevented a dream goal from Lionel Messi.

His team struggled and hardly had any chances. So Lionel Messi took matters into his own hands. Around 40 minutes had been played, it was 0-0 between his FC Barcelona and Atlético Madrid when Messi got the ball on the right in midfield. Then the Argentine started dribbling, left several opponents standing, pulled the ball at his foot centrally in front of the penalty area and finished. He hit the ball well, the shot was hard and placed. But instead of another dream goal in Messi's career, there was just a corner kick. Because Atlético goalkeeper Jan Oblak steered the shot past the goal with his fingertips.

It wasn't the only chance in the game, but it was the most spectacular.

None was used, and so the top game in La Liga between Barcelona and Atlético ended 0-0.

That is more useful to Atlético.

Coach Diego Simeone's team remains the leader of the table: After 35 of a total of 38 match days, Atlético are two points ahead of Barça with 77 points and thus still have a good chance of winning their first title since 2014.

However, defending champions Real Madrid have the chance to catch up with their city rivals on Sunday evening.

To do this, the team needs a win against fourth-placed Sevilla FC, which with 70 points also has a chance of winning the second title in club history since 1946.

In Barcelona, Atlético were initially the much more dangerous team.

Marc-André ter Stegen in the Catalans goal had to show his skills twice in just three minutes when Marcos Llorente (33.) and Yannick Carrasco (36.) were shot.

While Atlético missed other good chances, Barça only came dangerously in front of Oblak's goal thanks to Messi (40th).

After the break, Barça came into play better.

Gerard Piqué headed (62nd minute) and Messi with a free kick (66th) missed the possible 1-0, both with Oblak.

In the 69th the goalkeeper had no chance with a header from Ronald Araújo, but the goal was denied because the Uruguayan was offside.

Ousmane Dembélé missed the greatest chance of victory in the 85th minute.

Since the ex-Dortmund came from about ten meters unhindered to the header, but did not get it on goal.
