Eintracht Frankfurt falls behind in the fight for the Champions League places.

Adi Hütter's team had to be content with a 1-1 (1: 1) at home against strong Mainz players.

Karim Onisiwo had put Mainz in the lead (11th minute), while substitute Ajdin Hrustić scored late to equalize (85th).

According to the second round table, the encounter in Frankfurt had what it takes to be a top game: Before the 32nd matchday, Eintracht took third place, Mainz had developed into the fifth-best team in the second half-series under Svensson. Accordingly, the guests from Mainz appeared briskly at the Champions League aspirants, Jonathan Burkardt escaped Frankfurt's defense chief Makoto Hasebe in the first minute and checked SGE keeper Kevin Trapp from a tight angle.

The next Mainz conclusion was even better placed: Onisiwo hit from 18 meters with a low shot to take the lead (12th minute).

Then Frankfurt took the initiative, Mainz switched to defending.

The best chance to equalize had Filip Kostic, his touchdown after a remarkable Frankfurt combined attack defused Mainz 'goalkeeper Robin Zentner (20th).

Another promising opportunity was thwarted by defender Jeremiah St. Juste, who slipped the ball off the foot of Frankfurt's top scorer André Silva (37th).

After the break, Eintracht continued to struggle in vain to get Silva and his strike partner Luka Jovic in good final positions.

Onisiwo even missed the big chance to make it 2-0 (76th) after a pass from Burkardt free before Trapp.

Then came the final phase - and the appearance of Hrustić: After a ball from the left wing into the penalty area, the Australian lost his balance.

Ten meters in front of the goal, he got up from his seat and carefully shot the ball at the goal, so that it lowered itself over hundreds of pounds to compensate for the net.

Steven Zuber (90th + 1) and Silva (90th + 2) missed a chance to win in stoppage time.

As a result of the draw, Eintracht Frankfurt, now fifth in the table, experienced a setback in the battle for the Champions League places: The direct competition from Dortmund and Wolfsburg had won their games on Saturday.

Mainz missed the opportunity to fix relegation prematurely due to the late equalization.
