Deconfinement: what resumption of sport for children and adults from May 19?

2021-05-13T20:30:46.238Z

A complete recovery for children, more progressive for adults and a return to outdoor competitions .... Jean Castex has detail

Jean Castex clarified on Monday the conditions for resuming sport, announced at the end of April by Emmanuel Macron.

If from May 19, children will be able to play sports without restriction, the recovery for adults will be gradual, with the highlight of the opening to the general public of swimming pools and sports halls.

Running and cycling races will also resume.

Children return to sport normally from May 19

We made it this time.

As of Wednesday, May 19, minors will be able to practice sport again as before the pandemic.

For children, the practice will be allowed outdoors, indoors (this was no longer the case since January 20), in the swimming pool and especially with contact.

Excellent news for basketball, handball, judo or even wrestling and boxing clubs, deprived of normal activity since March 2020. If some had been able to reopen their doors, they had to deal with strict health measures, where contact was prohibited (even for ball games) and practice sometimes limited outdoors.

Swimming pools and sports halls open to the general public on June 9

For adults, however, the recovery will be gradual. Between Wednesday April 19 and Wednesday June 9, it will only be possible (except for high level athletes and priority public) to practice physical activity outside, as is currently the case. The first changes will appear on June 9 with, on the one hand, the possibility of resuming outdoor contact sport (especially football for amateurs, who until now had to be content with individual games) and, on the other hand, to redo indoor sport, but this time without contact.

It is therefore from Wednesday June 9 that adults will be able to return to the swimming pool and the sports halls, where the gauges will be limited to 50% of the total capacity. In fitness rooms, wearing a sports mask, developed in recent months, will be recommended, but not compulsory. From June 30, those over 18 will be able to practice sport as before Covid. Outside, inside, with or without contact. It is therefore on this date that it will again be possible for everyone to play indoor basketball or handball, boxing or judo.

Regarding free outdoor activities, authorized during confinement, the constraints will gradually be lightened.

The current limit of 6 people will increase to 10 on Wednesday May 19 and then to 25 on June 9.

It is only from this date that contacts will be possible and that the game of football with friends in a park or basketball in the playgrounds will be authorized.

The health pass to run a marathon?

The resumption is also ringing for outdoor sports competitions in public spaces (cycling or running events, etc.), but in an extremely gradual manner. Thus, between May 19 and June 9, the races can only accommodate a maximum of 50 participants. The gauge will then rise to 500 and then to 2,500. With a constraint, since the health pass, in force in sports arenas, could also be imposed beyond 1,000 participants. As of June 30, we could therefore have to present a negative PCR test or a vaccination certificate to start a trail or a marathon.
