The idea behind the move is clear to decision makers - it is impossible to create a precedent that due to the security situation of the league will be closed, even at the cost of lack of sporting value in some cases. To American players it seems like greed for money, and there is no doubt that economic consideration is also a part, albeit not central. The criticism will be heard when Hapoel Jerusalem looks even worse than it did during the season. But in extreme situations there are always victims, and the message that they do not stop playing even in such circumstances is important.

Abandonment of foreigners that may result in a lack of athleticism is the real problem.

Foreign and national football teams also leave foreigners, including in deciding games for titles and relegations, but no one talks about lack of sportiness.

In Israeli basketball, dependence on foreign players has become a real problem.

So no, there are not dozens of players every year who can make the leap and replace foreign players.

But by combining Israeli players coming from below, it is possible to create a broader base for a large number of teams, and avoid the current situation, in which any injury or departure of a foreign player collapses an entire season of a team.
