In the relegation battle of the Bundesliga, FC Augsburg scored a decisive victory against Werder Bremen. With the 2: 0 (0: 0) on the 33rd match day, Augsburg are sure to stay in the league - as is Hertha BSC. In the second relegation duel on Saturday afternoon, the Berliners did not get beyond a goalless draw against 1. FC Köln, but that was enough to keep them up. Arminia Bielefeld jumps with a 1: 1 (1: 1) against Hoffenheim at least from the relegation place.

The game in Augsburg actually ran early for Werder Bremen. After a combative initial phase, Augsburg's Ruben Vargas stepped out in midfield against Theodor Gebre-Selassie; Vargas hit the Bremer only lightly, but the attempt was enough for a dismissal (12th minute). However, Werder hardly knew how to turn his numerical superiority into something, once Josh Sargent came to the end in the penalty area, but they did not succeed much more than the blocked shot (21st). Otherwise a wild game developed in which both teams felt that they demanded more cards for their opponents than initiated serious attacks.

And so referee Robert Schröder again came into focus.

Shortly after half-time, Werder's Christian Groß came too late in the duel with Florian Niederlechner, Schröder gave him yellow-red (49th).

Eight minutes later Werder could not clear an Augsburg corner sufficiently after Augsburg's Robert Gumny headed the ball back into the penalty area, Rhani Khedira shot from the spin (57th).

The Bremer came only to a post by Leonardo Bittencourt (72nd), on the other hand Daniel Caliguri decided the game with a converted penalty (90th).

Werder slipped through the defeat on the relegation place.

Now five points ahead of Werder, Augsburg will play the first league again next season.

The news about the goal by Rhani also made Sami Khedira very happy. The ailing ex-national player apparently cheered in the stands about his brother's goal, which also enabled Hertha to keep relegation one match day before the end of the season. However, Khedira's colleagues on the pitch didn't really make a difference; apart from a chance from Nemanja Radonjic (30th), they were particularly anxious not to concede a goal of their own. Cologne acted similarly cautious and missed the lead through Elvis Rexhbeçaj (18th).

On their own, the Cologne team cannot hold onto the class on the last matchday. Against Schalke, a win must then, while Werder cannot win against Borussia Mönchengladbach. But even a non-relegation place is still within reach; namely when Cologne wins against Schalke and both Werder and Bielefeld lose their season finale.

In view of the Bremen defeat, Bielefeld also had a great chance in the relegation battle - especially against Hoffenheim, for whom nothing is at stake in the Bundesliga final spurt. Nevertheless, or perhaps because of it, the Hoffenheim team took the lead early, Bielefeld ran into a counterattack that Andrej Kramarić converted (5th). The early setback did not really have a negative impact on the Bielefeld game, on the contrary: Just a few seconds after the goal, Ritsu Doan narrowly failed with a long-range shot (6th). Andreas Voglsammer made it even better and nicer, who curled a free kick from around 20 meters over the wall into the left corner (23rd). Relegation battle can be so beautiful.

And Bielefeld pressed for the win, but missed the winning goal: First, Voglsammer came a little unexpectedly through a botched header return from Hoffenheim's Kevin Akpoguma, but failed from close range on the regular substitute keeper Philipp Pentke (49th).

Then Fabian Klos failed with a header, also from close range, also on the strong Pentke (64th), to whom the relegation competition of the Bielefeld could thank.

With the point, Bielefeld jumps to 15th place, on the last matchday in Stuttgart a victory is enough for them to stay in the league.
