Want a repair?

The VAR must be conducted more quickly and transparently, players need to express a little more emotion, even at the cost of losing followers on social media, and there are areas where we, the fans, need to change.

Is it possible to be a little more efficient?

1. VAR

One can probably divide the football fan base into two: VAR supporters and opponents, and through this division also try and characterize each camp. So we are not here to determine whether VAR is true for modern football or not - the fact is that it exists, and it is here to stay. The train has long since left the station, and if anything, we can only assume that in the future we will have more VAR-style rules, procedures and efficiencies than we will get backwards. If so, all that is left is to try and maximize the VAR experiences, because right now it is far from smooth. For starters, it would have been nice if our Premier League could have acted a little faster, like some of the big leagues in Europe, and not have to take five minutes to determine if there was a hand touch on the pitch or not.

We seem to have the technology, but something is definitely missing - whether it's courage to make decisions (sometimes it seems like a judge is required to think almost in real time about his whistleblowing or non-whistling reactions, and the professional committee that will publish its decisions a few days later). Full control of the constitution, lack of shooting angles or an unclear desire to steal the show and squeeze in a few more screen moments.

Here, there is no choice but to mention: football is played for the fans, and fans should be considered throughout.

Even if it means limiting the discussions on the subject in time, or even getting us inside, into the VAR mobile, we might even hear in real time the discussions between the various jurors.

If we knew why it takes them five minutes to decide whether to pull out a red card or not, we might not be so frustrated or in a hurry to move a channel.

2. Broadcasts

And no, we are not talking this time about the quality, or the quality of the various broadcasters and commentators.

The year is already 2021, and in Israel it is still impossible to pay to watch a single game - whether in the Premier League in football, in the Premier League in basketball, and in fact also to pay in Israel to watch games abroad is not an easy task. We do not intend to complain about channel prices Sports (some of them actually make a lot of sense in relation to the world, and provide a very decent return. Others less so), but about the required transition that takes place in most areas of our lives, and in sports has not yet been completed.

Suppose you are a fan of Maccabi Netanya in football, and for one reason or another you can not go to the stadium, and all you are interested in is watching only Maccabi Netanya games on TV, and not any other team: why not be allowed to pay only for four games a month, and choose Should they be watched on TV, on a computer or in a dedicated app?

In the NBA's excellent "League Pass" you can, for example, purchase individual games without paying for a full season subscription.

It is time for similar solutions to be found in Israel as well, and to take another step towards the "fair-per-view" revolution that is practiced throughout the world.

3. Numbers

We are deep in the midst of a real statistical revolution - if in the past it was customary to sneer at baseball fans drowning in numbers (relevant and irrelevant), then today, almost every possible industry has a myriad of sub-categories of statistics, advanced statistics and statistics so advanced that the average fan has no Chance to know how to decipher them. Do not get us wrong - we are completely in favor, the narrators can certainly tell a different story than what is seen on the surface, or complete the full picture, but in today's reality, sometimes they stand almost alone, without context, and incorrect conclusions can be drawn.

Countless Twitter accounts (mostly foreign) are devoted to collecting statistics, which usually find themselves accessible on major sports sites, but it is not advisable to treat all numbers as equal. Does the fact that Danny Abdia finished with the highest plus-minus index in a given game in Washington, for example, say anything if he had a player next to him who scored 43 points, and the Wizards lost in general? Is Russell Westbrook's triple double of 12 points, 13 rebounds and 14 assists more than Damian Lillard's 45 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists? And how much significance should be attributed to the fact that Maccabi Haifa's brake, for example, finished a game with 97 percent success in dedication, when in any case most of his dedication was on a small area, usually to a nearby defensive player? And also: Would we accept this data if Maccabi Haifa had drawn and not won? Most of us are not analysts but ordinary fans, and as such, it is worth taking the various statistics with a limited guarantee. They can help, but not tell the whole story. Here is also the task of the various media:Instead of fully quoting this or that figure, it is worth trying and explaining it, or at least putting it in the right context.

It is allowed to rejoice.

4. Celebrations

It seems that this phenomenon has only intensified in recent years, with the growth of social networks and the transformation of football stars into network stars: any player will conquer in front of any team and not celebrate - sometimes because he spent half a year on loan.

Sometimes this group even threw him off all the stairs, the fans did him the death, and inside he wanted to do the exact opposite - celebrate on the heads of all those people, but he was forced to maintain restraint.

Raise your hands in the air, as an apologist, and long for the resumption of the game.

Friends, this is a sport - no fan of the team that has conceded a goal will suddenly be happy because the conqueror did not celebrate, and few fans will show real resentment to players who have already left their teams, assuming the celebration is not overly defiant or provocative.

In an age where money dominates sports, and is only going to dominate it even more in the coming years, every sign of authenticity is important, and we have no choice but to wish for a little more authenticity - both in Israeli sports and in world sports.

Demand emotion, even if it costs you 2,000 followers on Instagram or angry reactions on Twitter.

It's a sport.

it's a game.

You have captured a gate - celebrate.

And we, the fans, have an important lesson here - to calm down.

If it bothers us so much that a player who once played for our team won and now celebrated the fact that he did what he is paid to do - the problem is with us, not with him.

In short: a little less emotion on our part, a little more emotion on their part.

No need to choose, you can enjoy both.

5. Evaluation

This section is related only to us, the viewers. The dignity of nostalgia is in place, but it is hard to deny that the level of world sport has probably never been the highest: in recent years we have closely witnessed the best sprinter of all time, some of the greatest tennis players in the industry, astonishing footballers, basketball players. The person is to doubt and complain, and so is the nature of the average sports fan. This is how we repeatedly get into arguments like "Messi or Ronaldo" and "Federer or Nadal", instead of rejoicing that this discussion can be held at all.

Almost every giant athlete has a small asterisk - but still an asterisk: it's natural and okay, but maybe it's better to make a small correction in our thinking and way of looking, and deal more with the big figure and not the little asterisk next to him, whatever the asterisk may be.

It may be a little less interesting, maybe it produces a little less comments and ratings, but who knows when we'll get Stefan Kerry, Neymar, Novak Djokovic and the like again?

We better enjoy them now, in real time, and not just in retrospect, to diminish the future athletes who have yet to break into our lives.

There are so many better reasons to be angry, arguing and scared right now in the world - let's leave sport as a pure pleasure.
