The three-time road bike world champion Peter Sagan gave the German Bora-hansgrohe team its first stage win at this year's Giro d'Italia.

After his team had left their worst rivals behind on Monday with immense speed work in the last third of the tenth stage over 139 kilometers from L'Aquila to Foligno, Sagan won the final sprint ahead of the Colombian Fernando Gaviria and the Italian Davide Cimolai.

For Sagan it was the second stage win on a tour of Italy after 2020.

Former Tour winner Egan Bernal (Ineos-Grenadiers) successfully defended the overall leader's pink jersey.

The German Emanuel Buchmann rolled over the finish line in 26th.

In the overall standings, the tour specialist from Ravensburg remains in 15th place, being 1:47 minutes behind Bernal.

In the only mountain classification of the day, the Bora team pushed the pace a good 40 kilometers before the finish, leaving sprint stars Tim Merlier (Belgium), Dylan Groenewegen (Netherlands) and Giacomo Nizzolo (Italy) behind.

European champion Nizzolo tried to get back into the field on the rear wheel of team-mate and hourly world record holder Victor Campenaerts (Belgium) - but unsuccessfully.

On Tuesday, the drivers can relax on the first day of rest before the Giro continues on Wednesday with the eleventh stage over 162 kilometers from Perugia to Montalcino.

There are also 35 kilometers to be mastered over the gravel roads of the difficult one-day race Strade Bianche.
