National coach Jogi Löw has made his choice and appointed 26 players to the DFB line-up for the European Championship.

Fans can look forward to two returnees.

Munich - For many fans it is a satisfaction: Thomas Müller is allowed to play for the German national team again after his disembarkation in March 2019!

When the nominees for the upcoming European Championship * were announced on Wednesday, the FC Bayern attacker was in the squad, as was Borussia Dortmund's defensive veteran Mats Hummels.

Rethinking at Löw: Hummels and Müller back in the national team

Both had been removed from the DFB selection by national coach Joachim Löw * a good six months after the embarrassing World Cup finals in Russia in 2018 to make room for their younger colleagues.

For many fans that was a wrong decision.

And Jogi's upheaval test runs have not necessarily been crowned with success either.

Particularly bitter: the 0: 6 bankruptcy against Spain at the end of 2020 and the 1: 2 defeat against North Macedonia in the World Cup qualifying almost two months ago.

At his last major tournament - Löw will stop as German national coach after the European Championship and will apparently be replaced by Bayern coach Hansi Flick * - should therefore be left as little as possible to chance.

After all, the summer tournament has a significant impact on Löw's memory.

Instead of wild experiments, it is therefore a matter of resorting to proven staff.

Nevertheless, Löw also caused surprises and nominated Kevin Volland from AS Monaco and Christian Günter from SC Freiburg.

European championship 2021: Reus and ter Stegen cancel

Loew might have relied on other experienced players.

Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen canceled due to a knee operation.

And BVB captain Marco Reus * will not be there either.

He published a statement on Tuesday according to which he and the national coach decided after an "exhausting season" to forego the major pan-European event.

There will be no return from Jerome Boateng, who like Müller and Hummels was once thrown out of the DFB selection.

EM 2021: These are the 26 nominated DFB players

Goal: Manuel Neuer (Bayern Munich), Kevin Trapp (Eintracht Frankfurt), Bernd Leno (Arsenal FC)

Defense: Antonio Rüdiger (Chelsea FC), Mats Hummels (Borussia Dortmund), Matthias Ginter (Borussia Mönchengladbach), Niklas Süle (Bayern Munich), Emre Can (Borussia Dortmund), Lukas Klostermann (RB Leipzig), Robin Gosens (Atalanta Bergamo) , Robin Koch (Leeds United), Christian Günter (SC Freiburg), Marcel Halstenberg (RB Leipzig)

Midfield / Attack: Joshua Kimmich (Bayern Munich), Ilkay Gündogan (Manchester City), Serge Gnabry (Bayern Munich), Kai Havertz (Chelsea FC), Toni Kroos (Real Madrid), Leon Goretzka (Bayern Munich), Timo Werner (FC Chelsea), Thomas Müller (Bayern Munich), Leroy Sane (Bayern Munich), Jonas Hofmann (Borussia Mönchengladbach), Jamal Musiala (Bayern Munich), Florian Neuhaus (Borussia Mönchengladbach), Kevin Volland (AS Monaco)

EM timetable of the DFB: First training camp in Seefeld, then tests against Denmark and Latvia

And what's next for the 26 chosen ones?

On May 28th, Löw would like to gather his EM drivers in Seefeld, Austria.

There they will prepare for their first own European Championship game on June 15 in the Munich Allianz Arena against world champions France.

Before that, the last test matches will be played in Innsbruck against Denmark (June 2nd) and in Düsseldorf against Latvia (June 7th).

Werner, Havertz & Co: CL finalists are expected on June 1st at the earliest.

However, all question marks have not yet been cleared with the nomination of the squad.

Toni Kroos from Real Madrid is currently in quarantine with a corona infection and will probably join the squad with a delay.

The Champions League finalists Timo Werner, Kai Havertz, Antonio Rüdiger (all from Chelsea) and Ilkay Gündogan (Manchester City) will also have a little break and are not expected at the training camp until June 1 at the earliest.

Another special feature: Due to the increased risk of failure due to corona infections, the national coaches were allowed to nominate 26 instead of the usual 23 players for the first time.

In the matchday squad only the usual 23 players will be there.

Means: three DFB kickers are canceled before each game.
