Veteran Phil Mickelson has a good chance of adding another milestone to his impressive golf career.

The 50-year-old Californian is the leader of the final round of the 103rd PGA Championship on Kiawah Island, South Carolina, and could become the oldest winner in a major tournament if he wins.

The record holder so far is the American Julius Boros, who was 48 years old when he won the 1968 PGA Championship.

Mickelson played outstanding golf on the difficult par 72 course on the Atlantic coast, which was accompanied by constant gusts of wind at the beginning of the third round.

In the meantime, the five-time major champion was even five strokes ahead of the competition.

At the end of the day, Mickelson returned to the clubhouse after a round of 70.

With a total of 209 strokes, he is one stroke ahead of two-time PGA champion and two-time US Open winner Brooks Koepka from the USA (210).

The South African Louis Oosthuizen is in third place with 211 strokes.

Germany's top golfer Martin Kaymer failed after two rounds at the cut and was eliminated prematurely.

World number one Dustin Johnson also failed early.
