The American shot put Olympic champion Ryan Crouser only missed the world record of his compatriot Randy Barnes by eleven centimeters at the "Throws Fest" in Tucson.
The 28-year-old athlete balanced the iron ball on Saturday (local time) in the US state of Arizona to 23.01 meters.
With that, Crouser climbed to third place on the all-time list of the best in the shot put.
Except for Barnes (23.12 meters) and the former GDR shot putter Ulf Timmermann, who had reached 23.06 meters in 1988, no one had yet succeeded in a 23-meter shot.
In the past there were suspicions of doping in both athletes.
Barnes was banned twice for doping, but was allowed to keep his record.
He had set the world record almost exactly 21 years ago.
