Hamburger SV relies on Tim Walter for the fourth attempt to get promoted to the Bundesliga.
As the club announced, the 45-year-old will be the new coach and will take over from Horst Hrubesch, who stepped in on an interim basis at the end of the season.
HSV had previously separated from Daniel Thioune.
Walter was most recently under contract with VfB Stuttgart before he had to vacate his post there early in December 2019.
Before that he had worked successfully for Holstein Kiel for a year.
The new coach receives a two-year contract and leads the sporting fortunes of the second division team after the summer break.
It will be a difficult task for Walter to lead HSV back to the Bundesliga after the next disappointment.
Christian Titz, Hannes Wolf and Dieter Hecking had also tried it since 2018 and, like Thioune, had failed.
After the 4-0 win against Eintracht Braunschweig, who lifted HSV to fourth place in the second division table for the third time in a row, Hrubesch had asked for an analysis of the again disappointing season.
"We have a powerful force, we were a few points ahead in February," said the 70-year-old: "The question is, what do you have to invest then?
You have to do more to get better and we didn't. "
Hamburg, a founding member of the Bundesliga and second division team since summer 2018, is facing new competition in the fight to return to league one.
After the relegation of Schalke 04 and Werder Bremen, the promotion race should be more difficult than easier.
