Hansi Flick will be the new national coach and will lead the national team into the next two major tournaments after the European Championship.
The contract runs until 2024, this year the DFB will host the European Championship.
Flick succeeds Joachim Löw, who will give up his post after the European Championship after 15 years at the head of the national team.
From 2006 to 2014 Flick had already worked as an assistant coach under Löw.
Flick had made a name for himself as head coach at Bayern Munich over the past year and a half.
As the successor to Robert Kovac, he had led Munich to six titles, the high point being winning the Champions League last August with a final victory over Paris Saint-Germain.
Flick also led Bayern to the championship title in the Bundesliga season that has just ended - but asked for a contract termination.
In September, the 56-year-old will start qualifying for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
The DFB team is only in third place in their group J after three games, as the home game against North Macedonia was lost.
Against Liechtenstein, Armenia and Iceland, Flick is directly about regaining the first place, which is necessary for safe qualification.
