Unai Emery and the Europa League, a love story that lasts

2021-05-29T02:17:46.262Z

This Wednesday, Villareal and Unai Emery won the Europa League at the expense of Manchester United. The Spanish coach wins the trophy for the fourth time in his coaching career. Zoom on the exceptional course of the Basque in this competition.

First epics in Valence

Arrived on the bench of the Ché club in 2008, at the age of 37, Unai Emery had his first European games with the Murciélagos.

In 2010, he took Valencia to the quarter-finals of the Europa League but was eliminated by the future winner, Atletico Madrid.

Two years later, it was again the Colchoneros who put an end to Unai Emery's European dream, this time in the semi-finals.

Atletico will win the trophy a few weeks later.

2014, 2015 and 2016: The trinity with Sevilla FC

In 2013, Unai Emery puts his suitcases on the bench of Sevilla FC.

Twice winners of the competition in 2006 and 2007, the Andalusian club climbed to the final in 2014. After a nice run in which Seville eliminated its rival Betis, FC Porto and Valencia, the Andalusians won the trophy against Benfica Lisbon finally.

In a goalless draw, it was on penalties that Unai Emery's men won the C3.

In 2015, Sevilla are again in the final against the surprising Ukrainians of Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk.

After leading 2-0, Sevilla were joined at 2-2 by the Ukrainians but still managed to win 3-2 in the open final.

In 2016, for the third time in a row, Sevilla will play the final of the Europa League.

Despite their status as double title holders, the Andalusians do not start favorites against Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool.

Led 1-0 at half-time, Sevilla quickly returned to the match thanks to former Parisian Kevin Gameiro, then Coke in the 64th and 70th minute gave the Andalusians a third consecration.

With his three victories in a row in C3, the Spanish coach attracts the big European teams.

He will sign at PSG a few weeks later.

Missed return with Arsenal

After two mixed years on the PSG bench, Unai Emery was appointed in the summer of 2018 to be Arsène Wenger's successor at Arsenal.

In London, Unai Emery has a decent season and misses fourth place in the Premier League by one point.

That year, he managed to take Arsenal to the Europa League final.

But this 100% English final against Chelsea will not turn to the advantage of the Spaniard.

After a hung first half, the Gunners take the water in the second act and lose 4-1.

First quack for Emery in the C3 final.

He will be sacked from Arsenal the following fall.

"Power 4" with Villarreal

In the summer of 2020, the Basque returned to Spain and joined Villarreal.

7th in Liga, Unai Emery still manages to qualify for a C3 final, the 5th of his career.

In the final "the yellow submarine" challenges Manchester United, considered as favorites.

However, Villarreal is on par with the Red Devils (1-1) and pushes them on penalties.

After an interminable session, David De Gea fails against Rulli.

Villarreal wins its first European trophy and the first major trophy in its history.

With four victories in the Europa League, Unai Emery asserts himself even more as the great specialist of the C3.
