Germany is not necessarily one of the top favorites at the EM 2021.

How strong is Jogi Löw's squad actually?

We do the check.

Munich - Two weeks before the start of the EM *, many are still unsure: What can the DFB-Elf actually be able to do?

For his last tournament Joachim Löw nominated 26 players who should give him a successful farewell.

"We subordinate everything to success" is his announced motto for the EM 2021 *.

To do this, he also brings back Thomas Müller and Mats Hummels, who were once booted out by him, and lets his upheaval plan rest.

But what does the squad have in store in the end?

We compare it with other top nations - and point out strengths and weaknesses.

goal

  • Manuel Neuer (FC Bayern)

  • Kevin Trapp (Eintracht Frankfurt)

  • Bernd Leno (Arsenal FC)

Marc-Andre ter Stegen had to cancel for the EM, but the German goalkeeper line-up is one of the best in the world.

Probably no other nation could cope with the failure of a world-class goalkeeper as well as Germany.

Manuel Neuer will lead the way as captain, Kevin Trapp and Bernd Leno are good representatives - probably the strongest trio at the EM.

Conclusion: goal - world class

defense

  • Matthias Ginter (Borussia Mönchengladbach)

  • Robin Gosens (Atalanta Bergamo)

  • Christian Günter (SC Freiburg)

  • Marcel Halstenberg (RB Leipzig)

  • Mats Hummels (Borussia Dortmund)

  • Lukas Klostermann (RB Leipzig)

  • Robin Koch (Leeds United)

  • Antonio Rüdiger (Chelsea FC)

  • Niklas Süle (FC Bayern)

On the defensive, Jogi Löw * has two options: He could play with a chain of four or three, both of which are absolutely feasible with the player material.

Rüdiger and Hummels will appear in central defense, while Klostermann and Gosens have the best chances on the outside.

Nations such as France or Portugal have a little more class to offer here.

Ruben Dias was named Player of the Year in the Premier League, and Joao Cancelo and Raphael Guerreiro are among the best full-backs in the world.

The French impress with high quality across the board (Pavard, Varane, Koundé, Hernández, ...).

Conclusion: defense - international class

Defensive Midfield

  • Leon Goretzka (FC Bayern)

  • Joshua Kimmich (FC Bayern)

  • Ilkay Gündogan (Manchester City)

  • Toni Kroos (Real Madrid)

  • Florian Neuhaus (Borussia Mönchengladbach)

  • Emre Can (Borussia Dortmund)

In the midfield control center, Germany * is clearly one of the best.

With Kroos, Kimmich, Goretzka and Gündogan, four world-class players fight for two or three positions (depending on the formation).

The Spaniards are just as strong: Rodri, Thiago, Sergio Busquets and Koke are all at the top level.

The same goes for France.

Conclusion: Defensive midfield - world class

Attacking midfield / wing

  • Thomas Müller (FC Bayern)

  • Serge Gnabry (FC Bayern)

  • Jonas Hofmann (Borussia Mönchengladbach)

  • Kai Havertz (Chelsea FC)

  • Leroy Sané (FC Bayern)

  • Jamal Musiala (FC Bayern)

With no fewer than four Bayern players and some big names, the national team is of course well represented in the attacking midfield.

But: Only Müller who has returned is really in top form, the rest will have to improve - or, as Musiala and Hofmann, still show international standards.

The English *, who come up with stars like Raheem Sterling, Phil Foden or Marcus Rashford, are probably a bit better here.

Nevertheless, the DFB stars do not have to hide.

Conclusion: Attacking midfield / wing - high international class

Storm

  • Timo Werner (Chelsea FC)

  • Kevin Volland (AS Monaco)

For years, Germany has been missing a real clipper - and the storm could also become the Achilles heel at the upcoming European Championships. Werner seems to have slowly overcome his goal crisis, Volland was accurate in Ligue 1. Nevertheless, the German attack clearly draws the short straw compared to the other top nations. France * has probably the best storm with Kylian Mbappé, Antoine Griezmann and Karim Benzema. One of the three will probably even sit on the bench. England has exceptional striker Harry Kane, Portugal has Cristiano Ronaldo, Belgium has Romelu Lukaku.

Conclusion: Sturm - International only second row

Two points in particular should give the German fans additional hope: Good individual players have never won a tournament - and Germany is known to be the famous tournament team.
