Chelsea FC wins the Champions League against Manchester City: The defense wins titles

Chelsea FC disenchanted Manchester City's goal machine, a 1-0 win brought the Champions League trophy to London. Antonio Rüdiger straddled, Thomas Tuchel celebrated - and Kevin de Bruyne had to leave the field in pain.

... and also in the city of Porto, the colors of the two English opponents Manchester City and Chelsea FC heralded the final of this Champions League season.

The evening promised great football - and an equally great coaching duel: Chelsea coach Tuchel had already made it to the final with Paris Saint-Germain last year.

Pep Guardiola last won the pot with FC Barcelona in 2011, and his teams have always been among the contenders for the past ten years.

Guardiola's Citizens confidently won the Premier League title, but Tuchel's Chelsea won the previous two duels in the league and cup.

And again it was the Londoners who started the game better.

Timo Werner alone had three chances to score the opening goal in the opening quarter of an hour, but the German international was once again lacking luck in the end.

Chelsea hardly gave any chances.

If the team from Manchester did get into the penalty area (like Phil Foden here), there was usually a defensive leg (like that of national defender Antonio Rüdiger here) in between.

That did not change when the Londoners lost an important component of the defensive bulwark: Defense veteran Thiago Silva, who had already been highly successful in Paris together with Tuchel last year, had to be replaced after a duel with Foden injured.

Andreas Christensen came into the game (39th).

And then the bustling Kai Havertz was up and away: a brilliant pass from Mason Mount sent Havertz down into the depths.

The national player rounded goalkeeper Ederson, pushed into the empty goal (42nd) - and should help his team to the second Champions League title in club history after the triumph in 2012 in Munich.

It was Havertz's first ever goal in the premier class.

The offensive all-rounder will probably never achieve a more important one again.

For Chelsea things got worse than better after the break: After a clash with Rüdiger, the game for playmaker Kevin de Bruyne ended prematurely, Gabriel Jesus came into play for him (60th).

Substitute Christian Pulisic forgave the decision (72nd) after preliminary work by Havertz.

However, since City failed to fire really dangerous shots in the direction of the Chelsea goal, the American's miss went unpunished.

City legend Sergio Agüero was also unable to do anything in his last game for the club as a substitute.

In the end, it was Chelsea's captain César Azpilicueta, who not only held a hymn of praise for match winner Havertz in front of the TV cameras, but also the Champions League trophy shortly afterwards.

The success of the Blues was also a pointer towards the European Championship: at least Rüdiger and Havertz are already in excellent shape before the tournament.
