German ice hockey legend Markus Egen died at the age of 93.
This was announced by the German Ice Hockey Federation (DEB).
Egen had coached the German national team between 1963 and 1969, with the traditional club EV Füssen he was also a player and coach a total of 13 German champions (with a total of 16 championship titles of the club).
“It was with great sadness and sympathy that I had to receive the message from the Egen family on Friday evening.
It makes me very sad, because personally I adored and appreciated Markus very much.
In Markus Egen, German ice hockey is losing one of the outstanding and formative personalities, both athletically and personally, «said DEB President Franz Reindl.
99 international matches, 13 championship titles
Egen looked after the national team together with Xaver Unsinn in 1964 at the Olympic Winter Games in Innsbruck.
As a player, he experienced four world championships and the winter games in 1952, 1956 and 1960. At the 1953 World Cup, Egen won the silver medal with the German team.
Egen, whose sons Uli and Hans-Peter also became famous ice hockey players, scored 72 goals in 99 international matches.
He became a club legend in his home town of Füssen: As a player he was German champion in the stadium on Kobelhang in 1949, 1953, 1954, 1955, 1956, 1957, 1958 and 1959, as a coach in 1961, 1963, 1964, 1965 and 1973. In 1989 he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame Germany for his services.
His former club also expressed condolences on its homepage and paid tribute to Egens' “unique career”.
