Photo or finish: Maccabi Haifa again between ecstasy and sporting tragedy

23 seasons were decided in the last round, in only four of them the leader lost the championship.

Maccabi Haifa is the only one that has had this happen twice, and now it stands between achieving the victory picture after a decade and a disappointment that will be even more tragic than the Bloomfield traumas in 1986 and 2010.

And also: the figure that will encourage the Greens

Do not want to recreate the two painful past scenarios.

In 1960, Maccabi Tel Aviv lost the championship to Hapoel Petah Tikva in the final round, which it reached as a leader.

In 1965, it was the fate of Hapoel Tel Aviv, which lost and saw Ramat Gan overtake it (along with Hapoel Petah Tikva) and was crowned thanks to a goal difference.

In the 56 years since, only one club has experienced this trauma.

Twice.

There were a total of 23 seasons in which the championship was decided in the closing round, and only four times the leader lost her head.

Following the big miss on Wednesday, Maccabi Haifa now has to deal with this figure.

Because it is signed on half of the occasions, in two memorable photo-finish dramas: the first in 1986 and the second in 2010, in a bitter and fresher memory.

Summary: The dramatic 1: 1 of Kiryat Shmona against Maccabi Haifa (Sport 1)

Let’s start with the Greens ’happy finishing cycles.

Those in which she withstood the pressure and maintained the summit.

On the last day of the 1983/84 season, a blow by Moshe Selector gave Maccabi Haifa a narrow 0: 1 over Maccabi Ramat Amidar and a historic championship after erasing a 13-point gap in the pursuit of Betar Jerusalem. A year later, another decision in the closing round, with over 24,000 Scouts came to Kiryat Haim and saw 1: 5 over Hapoel Kfar Saba in the coronation game of Maccabi Haifa, which led the table by two points on the eve of the round and would retain the title even in case of loss (claiming the Betar crown lost an advantage at Wassermill and lost 2: 1 to Hapoel Beer Sheva who survived From decline).

The 1991 scenario is similar.

The Greens then needed a home draw against Maccabi Netanya to complete a double, and did just that.

Eyal Berkowitz, Tal Benin and the rest of the players only counted the minutes to the final 0-0 whistle that gave them the championship, and a parallel reversal of Hapoel Petah Tikva with a winning goal in the last attack against Maccabi Tel Aviv, did not change the picture.

The Green Dot made the difference and set up a fourth championship.

Coach Barak Bachar was also in such a situation in 2016, when Hapoel Beer Sheva reached the last 90 minutes of the season with a two-point advantage over Maccabi Tel Aviv.

Be'er Sheva fell behind in the opening game of the home game against Bnei Sakhnin, and a draw was not enough because their opponent had a better goal difference that was even improved with a crushing 0: 6 over Maccabi Haifa, but the leader was not frightened.

Maor Buzaglo, Maor Melikson and Ben Shehar became 1: 3 and Beer Sheva won the championship after 40 years.

Was in a similar situation five years ago and finished as a champion.

And now, for the moments of pain.

Maccabi Haifa reached the last round in 1995 two points away from Maccabi Tel Aviv and smelled a championship when they led 0: 2 over Hapoel Beit She'an, but then Alon Bromer put the Yellows ahead in Wassermill, the Greens realized in Kiryat Eliezer that the story was lost and Beit She'an completed a surprising turnaround and survived in the league with Her war movie.

Eight years later, Maccabi Haifa was only a goal difference behind Maccabi Tel Aviv and looked on the way to the title with 0: 5 within half an hour in Ashdod, but then stopped, absorbed one while the Yellows defeated Hapoel Petah Tikva 0: 3 in a game transferred to Ramat Gan, On the edge of two gates.

But in both of these cases, the Greens started in second place and were dependent first and foremost on the result of Maccabi Tel Aviv. This time their fate is in their hands. They are the ones who are at the top and only they have something to lose.

As in the two famous soul-destroyers at Bloomfield Stadium.

Came with harsh allegations to the judging panel in 1986.

1985/86

Direct battle for the championship in the 30th and final round: Hapoel Tel Aviv, ranked second, hosts Maccabi Haifa, the champion of the previous two years, who is one point ahead of them in Bloomfield.

A red victory equals a reversal at the top, any other result crowns Shlomo Sharaf's team for the third year in a row.

And for dessert: a historic live broadcast of a league game on Channel One.

Maccabi Haifa tried to play for a draw, did not bother the young Yom Tov Talias with Hapoel Tel Aviv's goal and in the end paid dearly for it.

Gili Landau, who promised when he entered the rival Merili's score that he would score the championship goal, did subdue Avi Ran in the 85th minute, who had saved the guest until then, and all the Maccabi Haifa players' claims to Eli Yani's dissent were to no avail.

The gate remained intact, the Greens' desperate attempts to equalize failed and success slipped from their hands.

The Greens' froth then came out on referee Zvi Sharir and Hakwon Rahamim Shasho, to whom Baruch Maman said (according to a report by Yonatan Hilli in Maariv the next day): "You are a cheater, let it be on your conscience."

And while his players wept bitterly, coach Sharaf claimed: "Sharir told me two weeks ago that we would not win the championship or the cup, he probably knew what he was saying. Now tell me what I should think of him. I will go with it to the end, I will ask to check it in a truth machine. We will pursue muscle everywhere. "

"It was cruel. We had to pick everyone up."

In a muscle role: the offset method.

Maccabi Haifa finished the regular season with a six-point advantage over Hapoel Tel Aviv, but in the playoffs the points were reduced by half and thus the gap shrank to only three. The Reds won 0: 1 in the game of the season in Kiryat Eliezer and reached the top, but one round before the end of the season they ended in 0: 0 in the derby and saw Maccabi Haifa return to the top of the table with two points. The lead should be hosted in Bloomfield by Bnei Yehuda, while her deputy goes out to Teddy to meet Betar.

Everyone remembers the sequel. While Hapoel Tel Aviv took the lead and then lost Omri Canada and suffered a draw, Maccabi Haifa encountered Bern Kadosh and in the 50th minute also suffered from the head of Leroy Tzeiri. Despite the lag, in this situation she is still a champion. The Portuguese Giorgio Chiera equalized in the 75th minute and his teammates operated a huge press with a push of 15,000 fans, but the orange assistant goalkeeper stood the test and kept the 1: 1. Maccabi Haifa only hoped to hear about the final whistle for Teddy, but then came the shaky news: Ariel Harush only the top, Eran Zehavi set 1: 2 in the 93rd minute and the Reds reached the top thanks to a better goal difference and celebrated a championship like no other, four days after winning the cup.

"The championship was ours, and then Adoram Casey came to me and whispered to me that Hapoel had won," recalled Elisha Levy, who now coaches Ran Kadosh at Hapoel Haifa, in an interview he gave to the "Double Team" podcast about three weeks ago.

"It was very cruel, people were lying on the grass. Within ten days we had to get up from the boards and pick everyone up. The players were finished. The championship we took the following year was the hardest and sweetest."

The championships have always been promised at home.

The sweet championship that Levy was referring to was Maccabi Haifa's 12th and final.

It was completed in a home game against Kiryat Shmona on May 16, 2011. In fact, the Greens never promised an away championship, so what happened on Wednesday prevented history.

In the lossless championship in 1994, Maccabi Haifa was announced to have won the championship while warming up in the stable ahead of the game against Maccabi Petah Tikva, after Itzik Levy scored a double in the 2: 2 that Bnei Yehuda achieved against the second-ranked Maccabi Tel Aviv.

Seven years later, Hapoel Tel Aviv finished 1-1 in Petah Tikva and thus Maccabi Haifa was crowned even before its promotion to Teddy.

In 2006, the third championship in the era of Roni Levy was promised following Hapoel Tel Aviv's 1-1 draw against Ashdod on Saturday, a day before Maccabi Haifa's home game against Nazareth Illit (0-4).

And in all other cases?

Maccabi Haifa secured the title itself, in front of its fans.

She did it eight times in Kiryat Eliezer, and when it was under renovation it happened in Kiryat Haim (1985).

Is it time to add a new home?
