2021-06-02T06:43:09.467Z

Chelsea fans gathered in the streets near the Stamford Bridge pitch of the new kings of European football on Saturday evening, after their victory over Manchester City in the Champions League final on Saturday in Portugal.

The hero of the evening, Kai Havertz, who scored the winning goal, was celebrated with flares, chants and applause, nine years after the club's first Champions League victory in 2012.

Health restrictions linked to the pandemic meant that many fewer Chelsea fans were able to attend Saturday's clash in Porto compared to the night they beat Bayern Munich.

“My father and I came here for our first European final.

And to win the trophy in this way is amazing.

When Havertz scored that goal, it changed everything, it was incredible, the atmosphere was so fantastic, ”exclaimed Gina Ruzyc, Chelsea supporter, one of the lucky ones who made the trip to Porto.

As for those who remained in London, many gathered near the stadium where the same supporters demonstrated against Chelsea joining the European Super League in April.

“Champions for the Fans”, could we read in the sky, during a sound and light show, in blue tones, color of the club.

The happy celebrations by fans, standing side by side in the streets, violated social distancing guidelines in England, where gatherings of groups of more than 30 people are normally banned.

Some climbed onto the balconies of the houses, raising their arms in triumph, some undressing on this night in the mild temperatures.

"Ecstatic"

Other Chelsea fans watched the game on giant screens in Croydon, south London.

They redoubled their cheers at the final whistle.

“I am ecstatic.

It's amazing, it's something I felt before, a long time ago, but reliving it is crazy.

I'm really happy, I can't believe it, ”enthusiastic landscaper Aaron Cheneoy, 36, among them.

“Why did we win?

Because we are the best team in Europe!

Look what happened this season, it's the third time we've beaten Manchester City, ”said Bradley Smith, a 25-year-old consultant.

In the North West of England, many Manchester City fans have gathered in the town's Townley Pub.

They drowned their sentence, but with the consolation that Pep Guardiola's side ended the season as Premier League champions and retained the League Cup.

Manchester City fans experienced desperation when Havertz scored, then anger at the early departure of midfielder Kevin De Bruyne after a clash with Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger.
