With the start of the European Championship in 2021, the topic of Corona seems to play an increasingly minor role in Amsterdam.
The number of cases in the Dutch metropolis has been falling for some time.
Amsterdam - After a difficult spring with high infection rates and the EU-wide delayed start of the vaccination campaign, the tide turned in the Netherlands within a short time.
Corona in Amsterdam is on the decline across all parts of the city, while the vaccination campaign has picked up significantly.
Corona in Amsterdam: The development up to EM 2021
The neighboring country to the west experienced a similar development over the winter months as Germany.
After a relatively relaxed summer with only a few restrictions, the number of cases rose rapidly in autumn 2020.
On February 6, 2021, the one million registered infections mark was exceeded.
The most populous and largest city, Amsterdam, had high case numbers throughout the winter.
The situation around Corona in Amsterdam has only been easing for a few weeks.
The Dutch Football Association announced on June 1 that 16,000 visitors would be admitted to the four European Championship 2021 matches in the Johan Cruijff Arena.
Originally, the Dutch had planned with a capacity of 25 percent (equivalent to 12,000 viewers).
Due to the positive development, the capacity has now been increased to 33 percent.
Corona in Amsterdam in numbers
The number of cases is falling in all parts of the city of Amsterdam and thus corresponds to the development of the national incidence.
This dropped from 308.9 on May 1st to 120.5 on June 1st.

The Dutch health authority GGD divides the number of cases into four categories based on the incidence per 100,000 inhabitants:
Very serious: over 250
Ernst: 100-250
Worrying: 35-100
Vigilant: under 35
This means that all of Amsterdam's neighborhoods are still in the “serious” category shortly before the 2021 European Championship.
Nevertheless, in view of the falling hospitalization rates and increasing vaccination rates, the Dutch government decided much earlier than Germany for far-reaching easing.
Corona in Amsterdam: vaccination rate increases
The vaccination campaign in the Netherlands got off to a slow start due to the delivery delays in the spring, but has gained momentum.
Around 9.4 million vaccinations have now been given.
The vaccination rate for first vaccinations is 36.9 percent of the population.
15.56 percent of the Dutch are fully vaccinated (as of May 30).
However, it will be long after the EM 2021 before herd immunity against Corona in Amsterdam will exist.
