Corona is currently still widespread in Budapest and in many large parts of Hungary.

The borders will remain closed to private visitors for the EM 2021.

Budapest - The Hungarian government mostly went its own way during the corona pandemic.

Hungary was the first EU country to order the Russian vaccine Sputnik and the Chinese vaccine Sinopharm.

Recently, the incidence fell sharply, but so far the country has stuck to closed borders so that Corona cannot spread again in Budapest and other popular tourist destinations during the 2021 European Championship and the summer holidays.

Corona in Budapest: The development up to the EM 2021

Hungary was largely spared the first major corona wave in spring 2020.

The number of cases only exploded in autumn and reached its first peak in December.

After a brief improvement, there was a second violent wave from March, the peak of which was reached on March 27 with an incidence of 670.

Since then, the number of cases has been falling again.

As the most populous city in the country, Budapest has always been badly affected by the pandemic.

In total, over 134,000 cases of Corona have been recorded in Budapest itself.

Immediately behind it is the administrative district (county) Pest, the metropolitan area surrounding the city with over 111,000 cases.

Just in time for EM 2021, the numbers have dropped enormously.

Around 50 new infections are currently reported from the capital every day (as of June 4).

Corona in Budapest: high vaccination rate

When the EU struggled with the procurement of the first two EU-wide approved vaccines from Pfizer / BioNtech and AstraZeneca in early 2021, the Hungarian government decided to go it alone: It ordered two million doses of Sputnik in Russia and five million doses of Sinopharm in China and issued both Vaccines an emergency approval.

This enabled vaccinations against Corona to take place in Budapest and other parts of the country at an early stage.

The vaccination quota for the first vaccination is 53.90 percent of the population and for the second vaccination it is 38.25 percent (as of June 4).

Corona in Budapest: Information about the EM 2021

Due to the current low Corona infections in Budapest, the Hungarian government wants to have the matches of the EM 2021 played in front of fully occupied stands. The Puskás Aréna in the Zugló district has 67,155 seats. This would make Budapest the only venue where the stadium will be fully used.

However, according to the current status (June 3), only local fans who are already fully immunized can look forward to the visit.

A negative corona test is not sufficient.

Tourist entry into Hungary is currently not possible for most of them.

However, there is a loophole: Germans who can prove that they have contracted COVID-19 within the last six months are allowed into the country without quarantine.

In this case, you must obtain a special online permit.

People with a vaccination certificate from the following countries are also allowed to enter:

  • Romania

  • Serbia

  • Montenegro

  • Croatia

  • Slovenia

  • Turkey

  • Bahrain

It is not yet known when this list will be expanded.

Corona in Budapest: Current rules

Anyone who has cleared the entry hurdles and would like to see the 2021 European Championship in Budapest despite Corona should observe the currently valid regulations (from May 23) in Hungary:

  • A minimum distance of 1.5 meters from other people must be maintained.

  • In public transport (including at bus stops), in supermarkets, drugstores, pharmacies and in markets, it is compulsory to wear a mask.

  • Public events are allowed in the outdoor area up to a maximum of 500 participants.

  • Shops are open.

  • Hotels are only open to people with a vaccination certificate.

  • Restaurants are allowed to open the outdoor areas to everyone.

Indoor spaces are only open to people with a vaccination certificate.

  • Cultural sites such as cinemas, theaters and museums are also only accessible with a vaccination certificate.

This only refers to the Hungarian vaccination certificate. Foreign vaccination passports will be added later this summer as part of the digital EU vaccination card.
