It has a French name
It is known that the first version of the World Cup trophy, launched in 1930, bore the name of a Frenchman: Jules Rimet, president of FIFA at the time. What is less known is that he was assisted by Henri Delaunay, then secretary general of the French Federation of Association Football (FFFA), ancestor of the FFF. From the end of the 1920s, before the first edition of the World Cup, Delaunay put forward the idea of creating a European Football Championship. It will not see the light of day until 1960, five years after the death of Delaunay at the age of 71. A year before being swept away by the disease, Delaunay had become the first secretary general of UEFA, organizer of the Euro. He will never have seen his project come to fruition, but “the award testifies to his lasting legacy, retaining its classic style, ”comments the European body on its official website.
