Sweden's Felix Rosenqvist (Arrow McLaren) crashed head-on into a concrete block on Saturday, in the first race of the Detroit IndyCar GP, and was likely saved by the wall of tires stacked against the concrete.

Aged 29, Rosenqvist was unable to take a right turn on the 28th lap of the race and his car crashed straight ahead at full speed.

The frontal impact was such that it knocked over the concrete block.

This impressive image was replaced by the more reassuring one of Rosenqvist gently moving his head in his cockpit, his hands holding his helmet, obviously stunned but not in pain. This impression was then confirmed on the on-board camera when he was able to remove his helmet, when security personnel came to rescue him.

After long minutes, while the race was logically interrupted by a red flag, he could be extracted with the greatest caution from his car and placed on a stretcher, still well aware, a neck brace surrounding his neck. It remains to be seen whether he suffered from injuries, especially to his legs, as the nose of his car bent on impact, but the end of the cockpit seemed to have held up rather well. The race, scheduled for 70 laps and until then dominated by New Zealander Scott Dixon (Chip Ganassi Racing), was to resume once the hilly area had been cleaned and the protective wall brought into line.
