Robert Lewandowski remained silent and Poland, reduced to ten, fell (2-1) against Slovakia on Monday in St. Petersburg for the first surprise of the Euro, dominated until then by extra-sporting concerns.
The entry into the running of Lewandowski, one of the expected stars of the tournament, did not keep his promises: the Bayern Munich striker did not shine against the Slovaks who logically won this first match in Group E.
Slovakia opened the scoring after a confusing slalom by Robert Mak whose shot was repelled by one of the posts of Wojciech Szczesny before bouncing on the Polish goalkeeper and entering the goal (18th).
Karol Linetty brought the two teams back to equality at the start of the second half (46th), but the Poles folded after the exclusion of midfielder Grzegorz Krychowiak, who became the first player excluded from this Euro after a second warning.
Coup de grace delivered by Skriniar
The coup de grace for Poland was struck by Milan Skriniar (69th), author of a recovery of 20 m, synonymous with victory for Slovakia.
Lewandowski still has two games to qualify Poland in the round of 16 and justify his status as a licensed scorer, but he will have a hard time scoring the best goal of this Euro.
