Eduardo Vargas (Santiago de Chile, 31 years old) is a national team player.

He fits better dressed in red than in another color from his clubs.

He has an idyll dressed in the Chilean uniform when he performs better with goals.

With La Roja, he has already established himself as the second best scorer with 39 goals, below the 46 scored by his teammate Alexis Sánchez.

This Monday, Vargas was decisive for Chile to catch Argentina in the first match of the Copa América. At the restart of the game, the attacker was facing the Albiceleste goal. His shot ended up in the chest of goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez. And on the rebound Arturo Vidal tried to score the goal, but was hit by Nicolás Tagliafico. Penalty for Chile. Vargas had positioned himself in the area to shoot, but Vidal asked him for the ball. The midfielder and former Barça player just played his first game after facing covid-19. Vargas pulled away and was on the edge of the area for any lucky rebound. Vidal's shot hit the crossbar and the rebound was left to an

Vargas who scored.

Thus he added his thirteenth goal in the Copa América and is one goal away from tying the Peruvian striker, Paolo Guerrero.

The table of historical scorers is commanded by Argentine Norberto Méndez with 17 goals.

Vargas works differently at La Roja. In the clubs he has been, he has had a low-profile scoring rhythm. His best year, in a local championship, was with the University of Chile in 2011 with 17 league goals. He has wandered in Europe for Napoli (2011-13), Valencia (2013-14), Queens Park Rangers (2014-15), Hoffenheim (2015-2017). In America he has tried with the Gremio, the Tigres and Atlético Mineiro. His performance, however, has been far from being one of the top scorers in each of the teams. Outside of Chile, it was in Mexico where he again had a scoring rhythm in the 2018-19 campaign with 15 goals between the League and the Cup.

Of the 13 goals that

Edu

Vargas

has scored

in four editions of the Copa América, six of them were scored in a single tournament.

It happened in 2016, in the United States, and he scored four goals for Chile to give Mexico its worst defeat in history: 7-0.

Vargas began his career in a

reality show

together with 31 other footballers, in which they aspired to play, for a month, for Ronaldo, Raúl, Figo, Beckham and Zidane for Real Madrid.

Vargas did not win that opportunity, but that experience earned him to reach Cobreloa in his country and then take a leap to the University of Chile.

In his record he has two Copa América (2015 and 2016) and his goals still have no ceiling to stop them.
