The Netherlands is in the round of 16 of the European Football Championship.

Due to the 2-0 (1-0) against Austria on the second group matchday, the Dutch in Group C can no longer be ousted from first place due to the direct comparison.

Memphis Depay scored the lead for Elftal with a penalty (11th minute), Denzel Dumfries the preliminary decision.

The Netherlands had already started furiously in their European Championship opener against Ukraine, but had missed numerous chances.

Coach Frank de Boer's team also pressed against Austria from the start, causing problems in the Austrian development.

After nine minutes, the departing Bayern star David Alaba kicked his opponent Denzel Dumfries on the foot after losing the ball, referee Orel Grinfeld's whistle was initially silent.

However, after consulting the video assistant and going to the review area, Grinfeld decided on a penalty.

Memphis converted safely - not a matter of course at this European Championship: of the previous five penalties, only one had been in goal.

As a result, the Netherlands missed a higher lead: Memphis hit the right side netting with a shot from around 20 meters (25th).

The spectators in Amsterdam's Johann Cruyff Arena had the goal scream on their lips as well as a quarter of an hour later when Memphis shot over the almost empty goal from a short distance after preparatory work by Wout Weghorst (40th).

Austria hardly ever becomes dangerous

Hardly anything came from the Austrians after the first European Championship victory in their history against North Macedonia.

Not even after the restart when the Netherlands withdrew and let their opponents take the ball.

Austria did not come up against the strong defense structure of the Dutch around Matthijs de Ligt, who returned after a groin injury.

After the storming central defenders Stefan de Vrij and de Ligt missed a corner twice (61st), substitute Donyell Malen made the decision.

The fast winger was sent deep into the opposing half against advancing Austrians and put aside in front of goalkeeper Daniel Bachmann, Dumfries scored with his second tournament goal for the preliminary decision (67th).

Austria must now tremble for the round of 16 when it still has everything under control.

On the last day of the group, the team of coach Franco Foda will meet Ukraine on Monday (6 p.m., live ticker SPIEGEL.de).

Ukraine scored one more goal with a goal difference of 4: 4, Austria 3: 3.

Because these statistics would be used in a draw, the Austrians have to win.
