The German national soccer team will continue to have their progress in the 2021 European Championship in their own hands: The 4-2 win against Portugal puts Joachim Löw's team in a good starting position before the final group game.
The two best teams in each group qualify for the round of 16, plus the four best third-placed teams.
How does the German team get into the knockout round?
And: Which opponents are there in the round of the last 16?
Before the final game against Hungary on Wednesday (9 p.m., TV: ZDF / Magenta, live ticker: SPIEGEL.de), a whole series of paths through the tournament are still possible.
These are the scenarios:
If Germany wins against Hungary, the DFB team will definitely be among the top two in Group F and will therefore
be in the round of 16
.
Should France not win in the parallel game against Portugal, it would even be enough to win the group.
With a draw against Hungary, the DFB-Elf would have four points on the account.
For second place in the group then that's enough if Portugal does not win against France - otherwise because of the lost direct comparison Germany would be level on points with the French, but promising
group of third parties
.
Should Germany lose to Hungary, French rifle help would be needed: Portugal shouldn't get a point in this case, then Joachim Löw's team as
third in the group can
still hope to advance.
Any result other than a victory for the French would mean the end of the
group
bottom.
The German team is only on the safe side with a win against Hungary.
Which opponents are possible with which final placement for the German team?
These are the possible opponents of the DFB round of 16:
Should Germany win group F, a
third-placed place from groups A, B or C
would be an
option.
Before the last matchday, these are Switzerland, Russia and Austria, but there is still a lot to do here.
The exact opponent will be determined as soon as it is clear which groups will make up the four best third parties.
The scheme is complicated, Uefa has broken down the exact breakdown here under number 21.05.
One thing is already certain: the game would take place in Bucharest, Romania.
Should Germany finish second in the group, it would go against the
first-placed from Group D
in the round of 16
.
The decision on the last match day between
England
and the
Czech Republic
: The Three Lions have to win in order to displace the Czechs from the top spot in the group, but would then have a home game at London's Wembley Stadium.
If the DFB team progresses as one of the four best group thirds, the opponent in the round of 16 also depends on which of the five other groups the third-placed qualify from.
Possible opponents are the
Netherlands
and the winner of Group B -
Belgium
clearly has the best cards here.
