A Bundesliga duo has led Austria into its first European Championship round of 16 *.
Thanks to the strong assists Alaba and goalscorer Christoph Baumgartner, the team of the German coach Foda achieved the much-needed victory to advance in Bucharest with the 1-0 (1-0) against Ukraine on Monday.
EM 2021: Courageous Austrians reward each other thanks to Baumgartner
Austria * had big plans. Team boss Foda announced in advance of the game that he was looking for the initiative and not wanting to play for a draw. The still-Munich Alaba pulled a corner sharply to the left on the fiver, where Christoph Baumgartner (Hoffenheim) cleverly put his foot in between and netted to make it 0-1 (21st).
Ukraine * then increased the risk a bit with the thought of having slipped to third place.
But coach Andrij Shevchenko's team missed out on promising deals.

Until the end of the first half, Austria was still the team that determined the game and had a total of eight corners.
Ukrainian goalkeeper Georgiy Bushchan fished a remarkable flick from Konrad Laimer (Leipzig) out of the Kreuzeck (37th).
Towards the end of the first half, Marko Arnautovic, who had recently been banned, had a great chance of scoring the second goal, but only missed it while standing free from twelve meters (42nd) and then didn't get enough pressure after his graduation (45th + 2).
Austria led 1-0 at the break.
The only downer for the Alpenkicker: goal scorer Baumgartner had to be replaced injured after a collision.

EM 2021: Austria beats Ukraine - round of 16 against Italy
In the second round, the game wasn't as one-sided as it was in the first 45 minutes, which was mainly due to the slightly stronger appearance of the Ukraine. There were no clear chances for either team. After just under an hour, Austria nearly lost the opening goal. Lainer checked keeper Bachmann with an unfortunate header towards his own box (61st). However, a lot shouldn't burn anymore.
In the closing minutes, the fans from the Alpine republic were already celebrating the historic success of their heroes with loud “Stand up for Austria” - and “Oh, how is that beautiful” chants. A shot by the Ukrainian Roman Yaremchuk from the right flew past the goal (87th) - it was the only really dangerous action in the second half by a very pale Ukrainian. It is still questionable whether their three points are enough to advance. Austria doesn't care. The Foda-Elf will now face Italy * in the round of 16. Kick-off is on Saturday, June 26th, at 9 p.m. in London.
