Schongau - There is good and bad news for triathlon fans in the region: The competition planned for mid-July in Schongau will take place - that is the good news.

However, the “Schongau Triathlon” will be held in a slimmed-down form.

This means that the amateur athletes will be left out this time, as the "Triathlon and Sprint Triathlon for Everyone" will not be held.

German championship for youth and juniors

Instead, the organizing tri-team Schongau is concentrating on having the Bavarian title fights take place on the short distance with a regional league competition as well as the German championship for youth and juniors. "We have always confirmed to the German Triathlon Union that if there is even the smallest possibility, the German championship in Schongau in 2021 will be made possible in order not to experience two complete years without title fights", reported Josef Zeller, head of organization Teams that have been in constant contact with the German Triathlon Union (DTU) since the beginning of the year in order to avoid a second rejection in a row if possible.

Association chief Gerd Rucker supported the Schongauers back.

"If somehow planable and feasible, we should hold the championships," reported Zeller of the talks.

At the same time, however, it became clear that under the prevailing Corona rules, a single and a relay race for hobby triathletes would not be manageable for the tri-team.

“The division into smaller start groups depending on the incidence value would go beyond the time frame.

The regulations would not be feasible with the expected participants, and this would also require a much higher level of helpers, ”said Zeller, listing the problems to be expected.

The head of the association supports the tri-team

In the championship competitions, on the other hand, the process is a little easier to regulate. "The starting field there is easier to reach, manage and integrate into the process via the DTU, the regional trainers and supervisors," said Zeller. The elaborate hygiene concept developed by the Tri-Team is easier to implement in this case.

The organizers are currently planning the following schedule: The Bavarian championship with regional league competition starts on Saturday, July 17th, at 6 p.m. - provided the field has at least 150 participants. The next day, on Sunday, July 18, the young triathletes are challenged at the German championships. The B-youths start (9 a.m.). The other age groups follow afterwards. "In terms of timing, of course, everything is very tight," said Zeller about six weeks before the competition. Nevertheless, he is confident that the major triathlon event can take place as planned. "We have invested a lot of work, so it would be very bitter if the event were canceled for the second time."
