Tour de France: "A somewhat innovative format", everything you need to know about the 4th stage

2021-06-29T23:49:02.297Z

Each morning, we offer you three things to know about the day's stage. This Tuesday, Redon-Fougères.

This Tuesday, for the fourth stage of the Tour de France, the peloton is still in Brittany on the roads of Ile-et-Vilaine.

The runners start at 13:35 from Redon and are expected in Fougères around 16:50.

The eye of Thierry Gouvenou, the technical director of the event

“We can note that the format of the stage is a bit innovative.

We made sure to shorten the route.

152 kilometers only.

Very often this type of stage allowed us to trace straight to go from point A to point B much further.

There we changed and favored a shorter format because we want to modify the style of these stages on the flat a little. It is an attempt for this year that we will renew in Châteauroux then in Nîmes.

Perhaps this is to avoid the beginnings of a bit boring stages.

After that, it's still a good day for the sprinters.

There are no classified climbs, the route is not very difficult and there is almost no risk on this stage.

Redon, 10 years later

Redon on the Tour de France, this is a rarity that should be taken advantage of.

The Ile-et-Vilaine sub-prefecture is not often on the Tour map.

This is only the second time that the Great Loop has stopped off there.

The first time was just 10 years ago, in 2011 for a stage between Vendée where the Grand Départ took place and Brittany.

The 198 km long stage linked Olonne-sur-mer to Redon and the American Tyler Farrar had won in the sprint.

Ferns on the map since 1985

The Tour discovered Fougères and its castle for the first time in 1985, the year of the last victory of a Frenchman.

Bernard HInault in this case, of course.

It was his team "La Vie claire" which won the team time trial which arrived in town.

Since then, the Breton city and its magnificent castle have received the Tour three times and the stages in the city are rather recent: 2013, 2015 and 2018. In 2013, it was for a stage start and Froome was in yellow.

In 2015, Fougères was used as the finish line at a stage that left Livarot.

It was won by Mark Cavendish.

Froome was still in yellow.

3 years ago, Fougères had again welcomed a departure.

In 2021, it is therefore an arrival.

Our prognosis

Unless there is an unforeseeable race event, Fougères will host a sprint. Yes but in what condition? The arrival this Monday in Pontivy showed that you must first show yourself and the first objective is to avoid a fall. Stuck in the final of the third stage, the sprinters will want to catch up: so whose turn? Demare? Cavendish still very discreet? We are betting on a coin on the leader of Groupama-FDJ.
